JAA Conversion

As Olympic stated, you need not surrender your FAA Certificate after you get your JAR Certificate. However there are some agencies within Europe that may not allow one to maintain two active certificates at the same time. You need to check with each country as to what they require and allow as to how many certificates you are able to maintain. Also an airline may require one to obtain a certificate in that specific country. Written nor medical exams are generally required. But a fat bank account is.

Regarding the time frame, I did all 14 exams in 6 months - 7 & 7

Dunno, from the experienced airline captains etc. that I've talked too, they say about 90% of the stuff are things you are going to forget and never use again.
No first hand experience on the matter, but when you start calculating frequencies from wavelengths and many other funky things, it's venturing outside the realm of things you need to know..

Once you are done your mind will just dump most of what you learned.
Not very practical at all. If you were to take the things that you will actually remember a little of, and the things you actually should know from those 14 books, you would probably end up with like 3-4 books worth of material.

Still doing my AF Reserve deployment downrange. It blows...
No idea if i still have my airline job with Travel Service upon my return. They were furious that I got deployed. It may be that I have already flown my fini flight. It will be difficult to move and start over again. I may accept a non-flying position in Slovakia or back in Virginia.
Glad to hear you are well. I do miss my layover's there in the Rafina area.
