Default Getting ready for furlough - help!

OK, this is my first post, and I appreciate the help in advance. I've been reading all of the posts regarding available flying.

I have applied to Etihad and Emirates. I do NOT have a JAR license. I am currently SIC type rated in the 737 (useless) and fly as an FO for UAL. I have already been furloughed once. I have 2200 hours with UAL in the 727 as an FO and the 737 as an FO, with about 1600 of it in the guppy.

I am looking at Ryan as well, but I don't honestly know if I can fly over in the EU as a US citzen. From what I gather, I need to get a tier 2 VISA, and I don;t know if I can or will get that.

Does anyone have any good ideas for work with my qualifications? I flew for ACA before UAL, but got hired pretty quickly (it was the boom time of the industry) so I only have about 500 hours as Captain. My total time is about 4400 hours.

Thanks for ANYONE's help - I am indebted to anyone with info on any airline I could feed my four kids with pay from.

What are you looking for exactly? Are you thinking just Europe or are you looking at other thing's?

Have you spoken to with contract companies yet, and I mean actually spoken with them? With your time you should be in pretty good steed. You might require a command type rating but it'd be no problem I think.

Perhaps the best, in my opinion, might be to try ANA/AJX through Hawaiian (they are called something else now I think, but Brian is still the guy to talk to speak with). They have B737 positions as far as I know. EK Birdcage might know more. Also, the commute is quite do-able .

Shanghai Airlines might be another go but I'm not sure where to go for that one. Rishworth perhaps has a contract still.

At any rate, make sure you get on the phone after you fill out the applications. Hawaiian for Japan, GAP (GAP Aviation Home) for KAL, WASINC for Japan and Rishworth for Asia, Europe and the S Pacific (perhaps Air Pacific?).

If you are desperate then you could call Bellview in Nigeria as they always seam to need B737 and B767 drivers. They do offer a commute and apparently the pay is OK; I'd keep the family in Tunisa or S. Europe though.

If you still have a hankerin' to fly the good old B727 DHL Bahrain pays OK and the city is great, I used to fly for them and still know some pilots there. Transafrik used to be a decent employer as well but I have not heard much for some time; helps if you habla español.

Good post from Koru with some good ideas, but as an American citizen I still advise to stay away from U.S. contract agencies. Therefore GAP for KAL and HACS for Japan are probably not the best idea. Not that there is anything wrong with those agencies, but life is far simplier if you do not get a 1099 form from your employer. I would reccommend either Cambridge Communications ( very good reputation ) for KAL or PARC ( also good ) for Japan if you are a U.S. citizen.

I would avoid Rishworth based on their reputation.

All that said, as a 737 First Officer your options are limited. It's far easier to get a job as a captain on the foreign contracts. Others that hire first officers are Cathay Cargo, Viva Macau, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, China Airlines, EVA Airways, Jazeera Airways, Saudi Arabian, Saudi Aramco, as well as those mentioned by Koru. You might try to get a recurrent session in the CRJ and that could put you in a position to get a CRJ captain position somewhere like Arik in Nigeria as well as some of the Chinese operators.

-B747-400 Captains average monthly salary is $13,000 (base in Los Angeles)

If you flew the CRJ 200 for ASA with 500 PIC, then try www.wasinc.net

Hiring CRJ captains to fly in China. If you're open to new things over seas...give it a look.

You should also look into Vietnam if you feel like an adventure...I believe their 73 contract had provisions for upgrade on the 73.

As far as I know Ryan won't give you a look unless you have 500 PIC on type as an American. But who knows.

Also look into Adria Airways...they hire FAA cert guys with 1500 PIC on type, but I imagine they would give you a look with your exp since they also fly 73s.

Have you thought about using WIA funds from your state for a 777 or 744 type? Jade and KAL would be all over you with your exp if you get the type, from what my humble ears have heard.

Send one in for Cathay DEFO also. And corporate BBJ operators. Anything else I'm sure others can or already have added.

Good luck...I hate to hear what's happening up there.

Randy BMC... If you are interested in RYANAIR, then you should contact Brookfield Aviation for full details. regarding the work visa details.

You will need to qualify for a UK work visa before a formal interview is set up.

As a side bar... Oxford Aviation of the UK has purchased PARC Aviation. Oxford owns the former SAS flight training Academy too. Oxford now has a complete flight training program from start to a frozen 737NG ATPL. A number of Oxford students find their way into the cockpit of RYR as other European carriers. With this being said, I don’t know how all of this will effect new Ryanair entrants.

You can talk with the folks at Oxford too.

In any event... its alot easier and less expensive if you are currently typed on the 737 with glass cockpit experience too.

To clarify a few points - I was at ACA (Atlantic Coast Airlines out of Dulles as UAX) and flew the mighty Jetstream 31 and 41.

I have a type on the 737 through UAL, but it is a useless SIC only type.

I just got a letter today from Emirates telling me I was shortlisted. I don't exactly know what that means other than I wasn't turned down. Does anyone know if it is a guaranteed interview, or just a maybe?

I also just received my bump letter from the 737, and the next aircraft I go to, I will be typed on. I have a choice of doing the A320 and holding a line for a little bit at my home domicile, or bidding the 757/767 out of LAX and commuting to reserve. Which is more marketable in your regarded opinions?

Finally, it doesn't seem that I can PM - I don't see an inbox or anything of the sort on my user CP.

Thanks again - and keep the info flowing! I will be sure to give back what I can when I get to where ever it is I end up.

That means you will be contacted for an interview. It used to be about a month or two but I'm not exactly sure how long it's taking right now but I will try to find out for you. As for the type, I personally would go for the 756 (heavy time) but others may dissagree. Good luck!
