The bus is the best way to go. You can take the train from Narita but you are looking at about 1.5 to 2 hours and having to deal with crowded trains with no place to store your luggage.

The medical will cover everything you can imagine. Height, Weight, BP, Pulse, Blood test, EKG, EEG, chest X-ray, urine test, lung capacity test, medical history, general physical condition, near and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, field of vision tests, eye pressure test, hearing tests....I am sure that I forgot some. You will also have to meet with a psychologist and psychiatrist and do the MMPI at some point, probably a phone call back in the US.

Back when I interviewed there were not a lot of tech questions in the interview. From what I have herd, they questions mostly come from the FAA ATP written exam along with some operational questions. Sorry I can't help more with that part.

Allright lads,

Here is my experience. I did not get the job, but hopefully I can be of help to future applicants. I won't put any old info on here just some of the tech questions and my insights. Flew in on ANA from the states in coach. Very good service, so far so good! Rode the bus from Narita to Haneda, cost about US$30 and takes about 75 minutes. Fairly easy to find the bus. Next had to catch the train from Haneda to the Hotel because the hotel bus does not start running till after 6pm. This was a little trickier but I managed it without getting lost. So far I managed to navigate my way to the hotel via plane, bus and train. That should qualify me for the job in itself right The hotel is terrible. I am assuming because they turn away so many applicants they dont want to spend any money on them. The room only just fits the bed and the small desk. You can touch all four of the plastic walls of the bathroom from your seat on the throne. The bed is rock hard and the single pillow is filled with what feels like beans I think once you get hired you get better digs. Also none of the hotel staff speak workable english so practice your charades skills.
The medical was involved but pretty straight forward. The crew rep took me and acted as an interpreter. He is a nice guy by the way.
On interview day a very short ATP test. I read the Gleim ATP prep and that was probably overkill, although there was one question I would have had trouble with if I had not read the exact same question a few days before. No questions that involve calculations or figuring. On to the interview. The largest thing I have flown is a CRJ and I currently fly a Citation so I think they were pretty fare with the questions they asked me, no ETOPS or international ops. I thought I did pretty good in the interview. Answered all their questions and had the HR reps nodding and smiling at my answers. Typical HR stuff, why us, how will you handle the cummute etc. Asked me about class B. I told him dimensions, speeds in and under, equipment requirements, etc. Seemed happy. At what speed are ailerons used? What is an MEA, what does A mean following a number on an airway. Wanted to know about holdover tables and types of fluid. He wanted me to give him a specific example of a time for a type of apllication and precipitation. I told him I havnt had to use the table for nine months and could not remeber a specific number, seemed O.K. with the fact that I new how to use it but you might want to memorize one or two senarios. Is there any indication of engine icing. I got a little hung up on some V speed questions. He wanted to know relationships of all the speeds. I did not know the numbers just the relationships. For example what percentage of VMC is VR. Another chap said he was going to ask me a bunch of mechanical questions but changed his mind because I used to be an A&P. I cant remember the rest of the questions but each of the 3 captains spent about 5-10 minutes asking questions. I read a couple of interview prep books and I think that prepared me well enough At this stage I was pretty confident that I had passed the interview and it was all down to the sim. I had a terrible sim ride. In my defense all the problems I had arose from my not being familiar with the 767. I had practiced the approaches on Microsoft Sim. You can purchase an add on to the basic microsoft program from an independant software company. All the buttons and systems work just like the airplane . You can even program the fms. Two big gottchas for me here. The HSI on my computer had a speed tape in addition to the steam gage, the real sim does not. Secondly when you lose the engine in the sim you also loose the auto throttle, make sure you have a mental checklist to keep the throttle under control. I have flown glass for the last 7 years so my scan was messed up. I knew the profile cold but was behind the whole time. I get the felling that they really wanted me to pass but I just went outside the limits too much. I am actually a pretty proficient pilot. I always perform above average in the sim and did alot of NFP for other pilots on their checkrides in the CRJ but I think the gap was just too big for me to jump. In fairness I would not expect them to come and fly my aircraft to the same standards I do without being familiar with it. Buying a couple of hours probably would have been all I needed to put it all together, but then I still might have been rejected and be out $1500. My hat is off to all those who pass this screening. I am fortunate to have a good job in the states with a fractional. The big draw for me was that I could commute from my home country. I dont know if this is me being a bad sport, but I did not get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the company. I still want the job because of the money and the commute but I dont know if I would have been happy there. It seemed like a very sterile and gloomy environment. They are growing and making money though so in todays environment that is probably all uou can ask for.

The Japanese are very business like during the evaluation and even until the first JCAB ride, then everything changes and they become very friendly because you have proven that you can make it. The environment in operations and in the cockpit is very relaxed and they seem to make an excuse from anything to throw down some frosty beverages. This is a very good gig and I'm sorry you didn't make it but thanks for sharing your experience

ANA are attending the Road show at ORD Oct 28th. Does anyone know if this is for the Air Japan contract?

I spoke with Parc on Friday, was told Air Japan have an ongoing need for Pilots and will be screening for the forseeable future. I am applying and would love this contract, it would suit me very well. I would love the cargo contract but would be more than happy flying pax. I've always wanted to fly the 767, don't no why just one of those things.

BTW, I am guessing that on the application they would like you to put down a 2nd choice for which contract you would like. If you don't get the cargo would you still be willing to fly the pax contract.

Good luck to every one appyling.

Default Where is the button??

The sim notes say on takeoff to push the N1 button after engines stable at 70%N1.
Do they mean the TOGA buttons on the thrust levers?
The only N1 button we have (B738) is on the MCP and it's not used to engage the Autothrottle and set takeoff thrust at takeoff we use it to set climb thrust at the acceleration height.

Where is this N1 button or is it another name for TOGA.

Nope, At the left side of the MCP there is a small switch that is for the FD, to the right of it there are three switches. One toggle switch on the top to arm the A/T, one bellow it that reads THR (this is the infamous switch you seek) and one right bellow it that reads SPD, this one is to activate the speed window. The best of luck in the interview

Don't sweat it, Robbo1. It's hard to go into a 767 sim and nail it if you've only flown RJs. Great job getting the interview.
