Does anyone have an idea about whether neck surgery as a result of an auto accident will disqualify you for the Chinese medical exam?

I just did the medical with Air China last week. They will ask about your medical history but an operation should pose no problem I hope.

Heart problems can be a stumbling block though. Also, the medical varies from airline to airline.

I did mine about four months ago at the CAAC medical centre in Shanghai. Your company may have their own doctors, the one that I work with does and they accompanied us to the medical. You can ask them beforehand, as in before you waste your time, if the past procedure is going to pose a problem; our guy's know what is what so they can answer up front, other companies I don't know. Our company doctors are quite bright, not fluent English, but I don't speak much Chinese either and I do work in China.

It may vary from airline to airline so, as is obvious with the various threads here, be cautious. When I went to the medicals (second for the work visa but identical to the aviation) I was with four other pilots and two company doctors. The second I had a company handler. For my ATPL I also had a company handler and driver who picked me up at my hotel (nice, and paid by the company) and took me to the CAAC testing centre. I recon the treatment varies from company to company considerably.

If you don't have a scar from surgery just DON'T mention it. No harm no foul. Four out of seven applicants for Deer just failed medical. Most were the "lack of blood flow to heart." Of course it could have been the antiquated "world war II" machine they use since most had flown in US with no problems. As it goes in China...

Neck injuries are difficult in China. The biggest problem is the government docs won't make a decision. It is probably an asian face saving gesture but they will string you along and then never commit to signing the medical. The Shanghai district is the WORST in China. BMI is not a big issue in China but having the ability to pass the blood tests, heart stress test and the kidney stones seem to be the major stubling blocks of most expats. If you have heart EKG or blood pressure problems be prepared for a myriad of tests to include 24 hour EKG, heart stress test, heart CT scan including the dye injection, normal EKG and echocardiogram. The company doctors can give you advice but are POWERLESS in getting your medical signed and approved. The reason China has some of the highest paying jobs in the airline industry for Ex Pats is because of the lengthy and seemingly impossible medicals, testing, licensing and background checks which sometimes take 6 months or longer. It takes 10 applicants to get 2 or 3 who can pass and then are willing to have patience to see the final process. Things could be a whole lot easier here but you can't fight the system, just accept it or move on to the next rodeo.

I am considering the 145 to 190 position in China. The medical is a concern for me. Does any one have any information on the color vision test. What do they use? Isharia dot test or and if so how many plate version. I passed a different one in the USA. American medical optical it was a series of shapes. I have difficulity with Ishaira. The rest is no problem. Always had a unrestricted first here but......

The test I took was a variant of the Ishihara test involving letters, numbers and pictures, all presented in that distinctive style.

Any definitive answer on this. I have the same problem, don't want to waste my time if it's an automatic failure.
