Been here 8 years, it's a take or live sort of thing, as Typhoon said it would not be the first choice now. time to LHS @ 8 years but remember 2 things 1 things change all the time and not always for the better and 2 Dubai nor EK change when you upgrade just the pay. to come and want 1000 hrs HS you might be looking at 10 years so its not a short term plan, but it would pay the bills if you are out of work.
Alot of the negative you read comes from people that claim they have been mislead by EK, true or false they neglected to do their home work ( I'm sure they will dis agree but the info is out there)
The routes are interesting the other pilots and some CC are fun to work with, morale right now not great.
If you attend a road show or interview ask some pointed questions, it helps you in the end.

As with all jobs it can be used as a place to hang out while on furlough or until something better comes along or even as a stepping stone to that better job.
If so, EK being a place to "hang out while on furlough" won't work. I suspect Etihad are the same; maybe Gulf Air or Qatar might hire those on furlough?

As I posted on another blog, be careful about the furlough thing. Yes, you do need a resignation letter of some sort. How to work that out is up to you and whomever. E.g. you might be furloughed from AA or somewhere but are flying at some stopgap place in the meantime. The stopgap place gives you the letter of rec., you're probably good to go.
BUT, word of warning. You will have a three year prorated bond. Say you get called back to work after one year. You will have to pony up around 24k, or as some do, what we call, a runner, and just take off. However, if your airline ever flies here and you are scheduled for that flight....well if you come to DXB there just might be a "committee" waiting for you on your departure to provide some free residency for a period of time.

March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Emirates, the biggest Arab airline, plans to order more than 12 planes to meet rising demand, Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said.
Passenger traffic at Dubai Airport surged 17 percent in January after growing by 9.2 percent in 2009, which “will push us to buy more aircraft,” Sheikh Ahmed said in an interview at his office at the airport’s Terminal 1 building in Dubai today. “I know that we announced something like 10 to 12 aircraft, but we are maybe looking at more than that number.”
Emirates said in November it would order about 11 new planes and was looking at models from Boeing Co. and Airbus SAS.
The carrier, the biggest customer for Airbus’ A380 superjumbo with an original order of 58, has also ordered 70 A350s. The airline’s fleet has risen from 131 to 145 since March last year, including eight A380s, it said March 9.

They have taken delivery of 14 new airplanes year over year since January 2009 and have hired a net gain of 10 pilots. 10. 10 pilots for 14 more airplanes. In case you wonder how that works? It's easy, just work every one already on property to death. And by eliminating overtime pay, you do it for free.
That's where the dirhams come from.
Welcome to Emirates.

Well, for one they get it from the backs of the pilots and everyone else that has been squeezed for their last dollar...
