I don't recall ever mentioning corporate mate. Sorry 'bout your confusion, by NZ permanent residence I was alluding to the requirement at Jet Star. Pacific Blue and Jetconnect have also interviewed lately (Both 737 operators). Not sure about Virgin Blue. One of last weeks interviewees at Pac Blue is going straight in, two more that I know of are on yes letters. Apparently in the new year for them. People on yes letters at Air NZ have been told 2010 now.

Ah yes, I almost forgot. Cathay cargo regularly hires for Aussie based crews. There is currently an A330 operator looking for crews (four FO's) to base out of Darwin, right to work in Aussie/NZ and a JAR licence. Go to the Rishworth site for the details. Qantas is starting up their new B737 freight arm, the first four pilots are online, but they want numerous crews into next year (that comes from Mr. Dixon). There is Qantas link to look at with B717's as well.
And here is my opinion:
If you hang around aero clubs and listen to all the negativity then you will stay home, be depressed, and never get the job you want. If you don't consider getting that job a job in-itself you will never get there. Trust me, I'm no rocket scientist, I didn't excel in school and as far as piloting goes I'm as good as the guy or gal sitting beside me. I was told I'd never fly in Central America but I ended up being a training captain at a large regional. I was told not to bother with the Middle East as I didn't have the experience, got that job too. I was living/flying in New Zealand less then 24 months, was told as I didn't have citizenship I'd never get the job at Air NZ, and now I am on the 777 with them. My best friend started flying a couple years ago at 38, had the doubters all over him in Canada saying there weren't any jobs out there, and now he's flying for the WFP in Africa.
So many times I see someone asking a reasonable question on these forums and the first group of responses couldn't be any more negative. My guess is it is normally people who don't want the competition, or just don't know. If you want a good job, at home or overseas, do the work, do the research, and it'll be there.

Actually I think about 95% of the time the responses have been pretty good. I think it’s up to the individual to choose whether or not to follow through. For those of us with some options it’s actually very helpful to hear everything no matter how good or bad. But then again I'm still trying to break into this crazy world so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

so from what i can gather, there is a reasonable chance of getting into an australian airline in about 2 to 3 years when i have my hours up? i don't care really what airline i work for, virgin, jetstar, or qantas ( qantas is long term goal but)
i don't take much notice what people say on here,
so your saying people that have receive yes letter at nz wont be required untill 2010, that would suck

I'd agree with that.
What is your CV looking like at the moment? You may find that you are closer to that seat then you think.
Look, an incredible amount of people send out a stack of resumes, most to companies they shouldn't be bothering with, and then never follow them up. It's like if you send out 100 CV's, then mathematically you are guaranteed to get a call from someone. It doesn't work that way in aviation. Sometimes you're lucky, but normally you have to work for it. And some of the resumes I've seen are way off the ball. We had one at my former employer come through and I swear I couldn't figure out if the guy actually wanted a pilot position or a job as a marine biologist. But I digress.
Qantas says their current intention is to do some hiring in '07 and looking at cadets again in '08. . . possibly. If you meet the criteria and you have not yet applied, do it now. Apply anyway to if your short credentials to get on the books (I was a lost case with Air NZ until I got my NZ permanent residency, but I sent in regular updates anyway and it didn't take long for a job after I got my PR). Get to know the 'good guys' at the airline, the ones who will lend a hand to a person who obviously is serious about getting the job and are able to give you good specific advice, and perhaps help things along.
And get the Jetstar app filled out as well. They have a load of 787's coming and someone has to fill the seats. . .might as well be you.

Oh yea, the three year wait, ouch. But you never know around here. A month ago I was worried about my job on the 767 and arrived back from LAX to find that the 777 had come well down the list to me, so I start on that next month. Not sure why people above me didn't bid when they had the chance, but wonders will never cease. So those thirty guys on yes letters may not be waiting that long at the end of the day; hope not, I could use a little buffer below me on the list.
And good luck with it eh.

I'll stick my head in again..... If you really don't care which airline and you're not too worried about the conditions, you'll have options once you get residency. Despite all the negativity around, QF made about $500 million last year and they just announced this week that they expect to do better this year. The order for 787s is something like 45 firm, options take it to 65 and purchase rights takes it over 100. Geoff Dixon is on record as saying he expects the "Qantas Group" to eventually operate about 100 787s. New pilots are going to be required. The current conditions at Jet* are not good but they should improve over time- Rumour is that they are having difficulty attracting guys at the current pay offer. All up things are positive and are going to get better. Cheers, TDK
