bcpilot,
My answer is generic and would apply to jobs in the GCC (EK, EY, GF and QR.)
It depends on your tastes and discipline.
A few suggestions to make it work:
-drive a Camry/Accord or some other comparable vehicle
-eat out once or twice per week at moderately priced restaurants
-stock your bar at home
-satellite/internet similar to what you may have in the US
-do as much shopping as possible while on leave in the US (clothes, shoes etc.)
I can provide more specific examples if you wish.
A few don'ts:
-buy a bimmer in training
-party hard all the time
-think you need to keep up with your expat neighbors
note: my assumptions above started with principal of $48,000 and $36,000 respectively. The ending amount will be less if you start the savings at zero.

Not too long ago, the sentiment on this forum was the package being offered wasn't all the great, and there was considerable animosity over street Captains being hired while qualified FO's waited for command slots. Perhaps things have changed.
I'll leave it to the EK veterans to discuss the specifics, or doing a search - there is a lot of great discussion about EK (written by current EK pilots, like 'Typhoonpilot' and 'the Turtle') on this forum worth the time to read if you're seriously considering the move. Heck, I'd just read their post history to start with.

Not to get to far ahead of myself, but if Emirates was to become my airline for the next 15-30 years. the time will come when I need to step up and be the good son and take care of mom or dad. Is it possible for them to spend thier last years with me and family in Dubai ?
maybe Typhoonpilot or Turtle could chime in

The answer to that is maybe. In order to live in the UAE one needs a resident Visa. For a foreigner to get a resident Visa requires that they either be a spouse/child of someone working in the UAE or that they have a job. To my knowledge there is no program for a foreigner to sponsor their parent. I also believe that to have a work Visa one needs to be under age 65.
There are some allowances for property ownership, but they remain unclear. Perhaps in time the UAE government will grant resident Visas to property owners. That means you would have to buy a property under the name of your parent so they would be entitled to the Visa.
The bigger point to make is that it is very difficult to remain in the UAE or as an expat for 15-30 years. Our senior American just left EK after 15 years and he couldn't wait to go. Many of the guys who leave do so because of a need/urge to get back home. They end up taking commuting jobs in Asia and elsewhere, i.e. Korean or Turkish.
From my understanding, it is not as easy as one might think to come back to the US. Attending an interview with a US carrier, for instance, is difficult, especially on short notice, due to the way EZ schedules work, for instance.
I've been a big advocate of EK for many years now. It is a good job and has been a really good career move for me. In the last 2 years they've been working us pretty hard though ( 90-95 hours/month ) and it is difficult to envision continuing the present pace without some serious health consequences over time. Many guys are looking elsewhere, especially after they hit the 7-10 year point.
I wouldn't come to EK thinking about 30 years at the airline. It could still be a good career move for some. I'd look at it as a 10-15 year plan though. For those under age 30 maybe even just a couple year plan until the majors in the U.S. start hiring again.

Typhoonpilot & Turtle,
Could you give insight to the Emirates page on APC. It seems to be outdated and patched together. Is there better COMPLETE & ACCURATE info somewhere else. I have been to the Emirates jobs page, yet that is limited to initial info. I'm in the US and my wife would like to see lots of facts; (she is very visual).

PPrune has some good info, but you have to weed through all the crap on there to figure it out. Where there is smoke there is generally fire. Some unfair things have happened to some good people. No doubt about it, but that happens at every company.
