Thanks for the info guys, especially Typhoon pilot. Real enlightening. I guess time will tell, but it still seems like a great opportunity. I know I will have a real hard time passing it up if I am offered the job. I am absolutely fed up with this mess in the US; not a career worth pursuing over here.
I believe it's something like 52% of departures in the US are now regional aircraft, and I don't see the trend reversing. Look at what's happening at AA. If they file for bankruptcy, what's to stop some union hating judge from pushing their scope to 100+ seats? Next thing you know, here comes republic with the E195 and $35/hr in the right seat. That's not a jab at the pilots by the way. I know that there are a few companies still left worth a damn, (SWA), but how long before some Doug Parker type comes along with the same old play book. Cut cost, service, and hammer labor. I hope it never happens but I'm not sticking around with my fingers crossed.
I'm interveiwing with EK in January too. Miami sim evaluation. I'm very hopeful of being selected, however my situation is unlike yours. Not married, no kids, and in my mid twenties.

Mid 20's? Jeeez man, hope you get hired at EK. All I ask is that you keep us informed of how life is as a 30 year old 777 CA with your pick of hot FA's from all over the world.
And remember, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Good luck.

Cliff,
This may have been already mentioned, but what percentage of those new pilots are getting assigned to the 767 vs. the 744/748 vs. the 747 Classic? I realize the Classics are leaving the fleet. Any recent statistics? What about going forward?

I don't know the stats, but the 747-200s/300 are scheduled to be gone by next summer, so don't think any new hires will go there. Currently, we just got the 1st two 767s, so also not many pilots going to the 767 until we add more and get cranked up. That leaves the 747-400 new hires, who will be flying freight, passengers (we are operating 5 744 pax planes now), the LCF and the 747-8.

Just flew in to AUH from CVG via JFK. Almost all the flights I saw were Comair doing Deltas flights. Such a pity that almost all the mainline flights were operated by contractors . I thought to myself how hard it must be for a younger pilot to advance and to make a decent wage. Thank God I'm finishing up my career earning a decent wage and flying new equipment with really nice crews.
