People from Alberta just have gotten lucky recently with their oil, but the first thing they do is get out and move to BC. But, worst of all, it's that 'we're better than you' attitiude that you guys have. I'm with bus_canuck on this one, Beautiful British Columbia beats "Wild Rose Country" every time.

Also, there is no way Calgary has the largest American population in Canada. Per capita, I garentee its Victoria, followed by Vancouver. In Victoria, every second car in from WA or OR, and no, they're not all just visitors.

.
Well we are going to have oil for a long time my friend! I dont know if you non-albertans know that Alberta has the largest oil reserve in the world in the Athabasca oil sands, Its even bigger then the Saudi's conventional oil reserve. So your oh so wonderful BC can keep begging for scraps from alberta like the rest of this country(except Ontario).

"first thing they do is get out and move to BC" Yes because BC is the hotspot in Canada now huh? People from all over Canada move to BC to find work
Can high school drop outs make more then half the pilots on this forum in BC? Nevermind I guess BC has plenty of them considering BC is the marijauna capital of the world! Thats something to be proud of

"But, worst of all, it's that 'we're better than you' attitiude that you guys have"
Ya we have that attitude because we ARE! When we support the rest of this socialist welfare country off of our Oil. THe thanks we get for it is being miss treated by this country for decades. And its the rest of canadas attitude that Alberta is worthless that pushes us to a closer relationship with the states then the rest of Canada. Just remember what happens if the rest of Canada keeps pushing us around.... back in the 70's when the liberals thought they could take our oil money. Our Premier went on National TV and said he was cutting off oil shipments to the rest of canada, with every albertan sporting a "let the eastern basterds freeze in the dark" bumber sticker!

Also Calgary has been said to have the largest American population in Canada. Which makes sense considering the OIL!! And Alberta is pretty much the only pro American place in Canada. (by the way you cant count stonned out hippie draft dodgers as americans for BC's population, those guys shoulda been lined up in front of a firing squad like the deserters they are)

What about living in the states and commuting? I'm retiring this fall and going back to Michigan. For me, it wouldn't be too terrible to commute. Any thoughts on that? I'm sure I'd get hammered with taxes...

Hi!

1 guy I used to fly with came here to DTW on his green card. He left USA Jet to fly for Air Canada based in YYZ, but he still lives here in DTW. His crashpad is in YHM to save money over YYZ.

My CEO is from YYZ. My aunt, who has travelled the world, says YYZ is the best large city she's ever heard of. We love YYZ. I think Vancouver would also be great.

I just stayed overnight in Edmonton. We stayed at the ___ ___ Leduc #2 hotel, between the airport and the freeway. There's a whole bunch of hotels and a 24 hour truck stop for food. The best hotel is a Hol Inn Express (it was full). It was just like watching one of those movies about life on an asteroid mining colony. It was also cold.

Good Luck!

Sorry to revive an old thread but wondered if anyone knows how difficult it would be to move to Canada and still work for U.S airline. I’m considering a move to BC and commute down to SFO. What am I up against?

People do it, main issue is limitations on jumpseat access for cross border flights which are of course technically international. We're not going to get into details here, but if you're employed by an airline that info is available from your union.

So commuting might be a little harder if your JS access is restricted, but other than that shouldn't be much different. Will need more time on one or both ends for passport control/customs. Can't just show up 30 prior and breeze through KCM.

Curious if any FedEx or UPS guys are living in Canada and picking up trips/layovers in Canada? If so, how common are those trips?

I am at Atlas, and we have several pilots that live in Canada (as well as worldwide). It is quite easy to commute from Canada to fly for Atlas. I have done a number of flights to/from Canada, some on my own, and some that Atlas paid for (I have family and friends in Canada).

PM me if you have any specific questions.

Namaste, and God Bless...

There are a whole slew of Canadians that commute into the states and a bunch of Americans that commute into Canada that fly for Cathay. Go to pprune.org Fragrant Harbor and ask there you may get some info.

There’s a few guys doing it at UPS. Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are the ones I’ve heard of. We have a bunch of flying up there, check flightaware UPS flights to see all the cities we serve. The biggest problem with trying to get layovers at home, be it in can or us, is that the company has been reducing line purity for efficiency. I.e., the historical week on/ week off of 100% Montreal overnights now only has a couple of layovers in YMX with random cities the rest of the nights. So you can still get home layovers, just not as good as it once was.

Assuming you have Canuck citizenship or a PR card, you’re free to go anytime. Otherwise you are limited to 6 months at a time as a visitor. If you’re legal to get up there, as I understand it, you’ll be a Canadian resident so first you’ll pay US taxes (as you work for a US company in the US) then be credited for that on your Canadian tax liabilities.

If you can’t cross border commute or JS on your own company flights then just drive across the boarder and commute by air from wherever is closest. Totally doable but it’s gunna cost you some additional tax dollars. Looks like the exchange rate will offset that quite nicely though....
