65 and still looking
Recently retired from the best 121 job in the world. After 42 years of flying I still don’t want to give it up. Started in Lears flying freight. Thought getting a new job would be fairly easy. 65 is a huge barrier.
Charter with ICAO rules grounded me. 91 is the only option. Applied to nine different companies flying G5 and Globals. Did not get a bite.
Don’t know if they don’t like former airline or is it the age. I’m not in a wheel chair and I don’t even have any grey hair. Thinking about Netjets, Flexjet, or Jetsolutions.
Any advice?
If you young guys are headed to the majors be vigilant. I’ve had hundreds of F.O.’s that flew for prior carriers and if I was a young buck I would pick Delta, and stay away from United. They will furlough your butt in your new hire class.
Thanks

Age 65 is coming to NetJets. It's in Rep. Bill Shuster's Manager's Amendment to H.R. 2997 "The 21st Century Aviation Innovation, Reform and Reauthorization Act."
NJ's parent company Berkshire Hathaway spent over $400,000 in lobbying fees to slip this little nugget into the bill.
It's only going to specifically affect NetJets as it was written to apply to Air Carriers with over 100,000 revenue flights per year. (NetJets is the only 135 operator in the world that meets that threshold) -- Flex/Flops, XO and others will be unaffected. (for now)

The FDX Feeders will snatch you up in a heartbeat. Look for a freight route to your favorite golfing, biking, fishing spot. Fly safe!

It’s awesome you have had such a long career, Congratulations! Many folks don’t even make it as far as you have due to health issues. Good genes I guess. I have known many pilots that just love flyng airplane so much they can’t give it up, and end up dying in the seat. Also many pilots die early in retirement because they are out of the seat and can’t figure out what else in life makes them happy. Lucky are those that find peace and solace in new things and cherish all the extra time they have with family and loved ones. Much more to Life and other opportunities for a new beginning IMHO. Hopefully you know that There is way more to life than just flying airplanes. I truly hope that you will find whatever it is that makes you happy and have a long, healthy retirement in your “golden years”.

As for new gigs......you’re gonna have to vastly expand your scope of aircraft beyond the G’s. It’s like me applying to Delta and noting I will only accept the 777 or A350 PIC position.
Many 121 retirees before you have set a tone of “that 550 owner needs me to fly for him!”
The question that comes next is “what makes you qualified for that position?” Large Cabin Intl Corporate jets and 121 wide body captain are not equal positions.
There are many reasons why you may not have heard back.
- your are indeed too “old” for them
- you have the airline captain brand on you (old dog / new tricks)
- they already had the job filled. It had to be posted for legal reasons
Who knows why....but I suggest you look broadly for good retirement gigs to keep your wings from getting clipped.
Good luck!
