Default Why not Minneapolis?

Just curious as to what the opinions are on this site on the fractionals like NetJets, Citation Shares and others not using Minneapolis/St.Paul as a domicile in their systems?

You have a large number of people in these metropolitan areas, it is also the home of Northwest Airlines and Sun Country, commuting would be easy. It is centrally located in the northern part of the states.

My guess is, Chicago is also in this area with more people and centrally located as well. Thoughts?

MSP??? NetJets does a lot more business out of the following areas:

-Washington DC-IAD/BAL
-San Francisco/San Jose
-Denver/Aspen/Eagle

My opinion, one of these three bases, specially Denver should come before MSP is even looked at. Chicago would be good, or at least more ops. than MSP.

They airline pilots to the airplanes, dosen't matter how much business they do there. they have alot of pilots in the MSP area. I was told when they have problems getting resumes for the current domicles, they will open more.

there is little rhyme or reason to domicile selection by CS. Our mgmt hates US air so they will never make CLT or PHL a base. Stupid stuff like that affects their thinking. They may hold stock in a competing airline of NWA so they dont want to make MSP, DTW or MEM a base. Also the fractional world is not as big in west so there are less bases there

Good points here. I am not versed in the fractionals like you and some others here. I was thinking along the lines of bigger markets and potential business I guess. I guess you could throw St. Louis into the mix as well, but then again, Chicago is very close again. Probably would not make a whole lot of sense with a bigger city like that being so close....I don't know. That is the whole reason for the thread.

As was mentioned, I know NetJets has alot of pilots using MSP/STP as a domicile. These are the older pilots that were with them prior to their latest contract and the current 5 city domicile setup.

As strange as it sounds, large metropolitan areas aren't necessarily the best places to shop for potential fractional clients.

When making a determination as to what constitutes a "good market for potential business" you have to turn your eye toward areas with a concentration of extremely "high-net worth" individuals. The the million plus "average Joe's" common to any large city simply can't afford this type of transportation.

From that point of view, you can see why a town like Aspen has more potential than a city like Minneapolis.

basing has little correlation to money though. Just because an area is rich does not mean it will be a good pilot base. Quite the opposite actually. Depsite what we think of as a lot of money airlining is actually quite cheap to the company as CS spent less than 2 mil last year airlining pilots. That is nothing. Really it would not be too difficult to open up every major international airport as a base but they dont have to as long as the apps come in. I will be curious to see how the domicile issue transforms as the need for qualified pilots increase

You're correct flyguy, but I was addressing 9999's second post describing large metropolitan areas as "bigger markets with more potential business."
