Either path will get you to United. Have a plan if United doesn’t work out. Where would you rather be stuck? Southwest where they have a good company that isn’t going anywhere or this dumpster fire that is getting worse by the quarter with no definite future.
If you’re still unsure, go compare each company’s crew rooms and see what that tells you about how their respective pilots are valued.

stop thinking about the company. think about you. ALL the airlines are corporate emotional-less entities, beholden to Wall Street or their hedge fund investors. Herb died long ago. We are ???? 3 or 4 CEO's post-Herb. AirTran is basically in charge of, or now has a large role in, the training department (good, bad, or indifferent) at SW. My point is, SW is not SW of yesterday.
F9 is F9. You buy Burger King you aren't expecting organic meat, GMO free fries, and cloth napkins. If you are, you will be disappointed and run to Twitter and MF your "poor service" (to a bunch of eye rolls because, like Burger King, their ALWAYS will be customers for the ULCCs).
It is what it is.
Where do YOU live? What is best for YOUR personal life? Wife? Kids? Commute? You will make 300k+ as a couple-years Captain at ANY and ALL of the majors.
My two cents

I you live in, and will never in your life, move out of LAS, DEN, MCO, I would go Frontier.
both are single type airlines
both are LCC or ULCC business model
both you can make a crap load of money as a Captain
neither are perfect
both have brand new or near-new airplanes coming
1 is Airbus, 1 is 737
1 offers 4 year or less upgrade, 1 does not
If you live in or near, and will never move out of, OAK, FLL/MIA, LAX, MDW, DAL, HOU, SAT/AUS, (Texas or Oklahoma in general), I would do SWA
my opinion
