Flight 503
#1
So FO called in sick this morning for flight 503 DFW-DEN.
Is there any way for one of y’all to look and see if a new crew has been assigned to that flight or not. It’s delayed 11 hours but just wondering if it’s actually going to go or not.

A similar thing happened to me, I got called on Reserve to work a flight. Ended up departing 11 hours late. But we did go. People were upset as expected and half of them left anyway. Some got taken to jail for trying to get through the door.
Id say you are probably gonna go. Just a matter of when. It is amazing to me that 11hr delays are even a thing, but it makes sense since its DFW and we dont have a base there yet. They have to get another reserve out there first.

Big delays seem to happen in Dallas quite a bit. I think it's sometimes a result of trying to cram as much daily efficiency into a pairing as possible. Things run a little late and crews can't quite complete the last leg of DFW to wherever. I've had reserve assignments where I've been the guy deadheading in to fly a flight that's 12 hours delayed and I've been the guy causing the delay because we were going to exceed max duty or max flight time if we flew DFW to DEN or whatever.
I think all carriers do this to some extent and more or less get away with it. Our issue is that we're so understaffed throughout every aspect of our system that we don't realize the "timing out" is going to happen until it does. With our persistent 30% understaffing model, there's nobody monitoring the situation in scheduling, SOC, the stations, etc. We pull up to a gate running 4 hours behind and the gate agent is shocked that we can't continue.
