Ah Long Call. What a great concept, no? Sit it from home if a commuter. No restrictions on having a cocktail (until they call you). No worries about planning/doing something that you're worried about having to stop midway through if you get called in. Problem is, at F9, there's a contractual way the company often uses to keep YOU from using it to full advantage. According to the CBA, the company can legally convert any LC day to SC up to 6 times a month. And, because LC is usually assigned/granted in at least a 3 day block (with all months having at least 18 reserve periods), the company can call you in to short call every single LC block.
For example, let's say you have LC Monday - Friday for 3 weeks straight, then a following week of LC Tues-Thursday. Not a bad schedule eh? The company can all you on Tuesday OF EACH BLOCK and convert you to ResB on Wednesday. They can do this EVERY week. So, you still need a hotel or crashpad. And, are you really gonna fly back home on Thursday if they don't use you (and possibly be called for a turn on the last day)?
They can actually convert you MORE than 6 days but on the 7th (and subsequent), they have to pay you above block. In almost every month I've ever had LC, the company has converted me AT LEAST 4 times. The only thing they CAN'T do is convert LC to SC on your last day of the block.
Just one more of the many ways this contract allows the company to ruin what should be a great provision for life planning.
