Default Picking up OpenTime less than 5 hours

Maybe I’m clueless, but I have seen a rash of folks picking up open time that is less than the minimum guarantee.

Can anyone explain this logic to me?

I know new pilots are trying to get hours to move on, but it seems like this behavior is counter productive to the pilot group unless I’m missing something.

I particularly like it when they immediately put it in the trade board trying to trade up. Reminds me of a Craigslist add. “No low ballers…I know what I’ve got.”

Sounds like a hole in your PWA that needs immediate fixing, allowing the company to build a trip that breaks min rig!!!!

It’s been pilot modified so the rig goes away. The company cannot build anything without rig. That’s the downside to the ability to split sequences. There’s more upside imo so I’d prefer to keep that provision. When pilots aren’t trying to build hours again they’ll just have to use a res on those. Or place in the premium folder.

I will occasionally pick up trips to build time…but to upgrade, not leave. No way in hell I would pick one up under min day though… no shot

Add a turn to the end of a sequence. There’s legit reasons but holding hostage on the trade board isn’t one of them imo.

There was an FO in ATL who is picking up 4hr split turns in PHL to get their hours to move on....

Its kind of horrific for us FOs who want QOL and a contract. Sadly new people dont care about anything else. Its all pick up anything and everything. No redeyes in the opentime, all trade boards are pickups on reserves offdays.

But I get it. You get here at 22. You have a airbus type and 1500hrs. You want to build time, update your apps, and go go a legacy.

Yup.

You go from Premium Open Time->Straight Pay Open Time-> Split Trip Open Time

Pilot's who pickup split trips are giving the company a triple win (No reserve coverage is lost, no min guarantee needs to be paid, no premium needs to be offered).

We'll never get a contract. Pilot's are their own worst enemies. I wonder what the legacy pilots would say? I'm sure they might admire the ability to split a trip, but they'd probably be miffed to hear pilots pickup the worthless scraps. Stupid.

I was told by scheduling multiple times. "You can not pick up until after 10 hrs after previous sequence ends. Even if you deviate from a dead head"

Even if it is legal they won't allow it. Likely because the computer won't let them. We all know who the real boss is.

I have done it probably 20 times in the last few years. Ask nicer? They call it “Marrying two trips.”
