Frontier Airlines possibility
#1
Guys, I'm an Engineer, not a pilot. But I spend so much time here because ya'll always know what the heart of an airline is more than anyone else.
Besides that I cant find any mechanic/engineer forums to get the dish about Frontier.
I may be offered a job at Frontier in Engineering. If so, should I take it?
How are they doing, I know they lost 32 mil last quarter but who hasnt? Does anyone know if they have a high turnover in that area?
How do they (office peeps) treat people?
I work at a profitable cargo airline but thats relative, we are going through some frightening changes and with new management, you never know where you stand.
What would you do? would you go to DEN to work in Engrg for 95k?
And do ya'll think they'll last another 5 years?

As for places to work, Frontier isn't too bad, think somewhere along the lines of JetBlue and not as rah rah as Southwest.
As for the future of the company, its going to be an interesting year, but the airline will be around at the end of it. Lots of changes going on right now but the new CEO seems to know what he is doing and is making some very difficult but what seem to be very good decisions. So much can change in a year so only time will tell.
Now, I would never expect a passenger carrier to ever be as stable as a cargo carrier, but it seems like you don't like the way things are going at current job. Like I said, lots of changes going on, but things seem to be trending in a positive direction.
Denver is a great place to live and there are much worse places to work. Unless you don't want to deal with the unpredictability of the airline industry, I'd say take the job, you'll probably enjoy it at F9.

That is a tough question and the only one that can answer that (and live with the decision) is you.
I would caution you on the "grass is greener"-itis that affects many in this business. Frontier and $95K might seem like a good thing, but once you get there, it might turn out to be just like the job you are considering leaving.
One thought, cargo companies (and a select few passanger airlines) didn't furlough after 9/11. It it happens again, you might be leaving the job you wished you had in the future.

Nobody stops shipping boxes. Cargo companies can even pass along fuel surcharges. Passenger airlines on the other hand.....well ah, yeah, in constant dollars- we haven't been able to raise fares realistically since probably the mid 80's or so. That's frightening.
Good luck my friend.

thanks for the replies.
I know that cargo airlines like mine flying 747s are making a ton of money, but we're under pressure from the competitors who are now gettting -400s.
Besides, I really hate the Northeast. I mean, 300k barely gets you a 40 yr old cape cod with wood siding and 10 k in property taxes.
I cant afford to live comfortably there and i see that Denver has livable great safe neighborhoods for under 200k.
I know I'm taking a chance, but who knows, they may not offer me the job!
I dunno......I'm just wondering if Frontier will be around in 5 years.

The people I know at F9 are for the most part pretty happy. They are also pilots and attached to DEN. That being said, I'm not a fan of DEN and will hopefully be out soon. As an engineer, have you considered FedEx? I'm currently looking at an ad in the back of AW&ST for engineering jobs at FedEx. To apply, visit fedexairops.com. It would pay more and be more stable than F9 if nothing else. Hope it helps.
