I say bring on the slam dunks and other ATC induced challenges. Makes the flight more interesting and keeps you on your toes.

Plus, every time you see it coming, adjust for it and make it happen with a little style disproves the "fully automated, no pilot airliners are just around the corner" theorists.

ATC: “Speedbird 23, can you cross XYZ intersection at or below 10 thousand feet?”

British CA: “I suppose so, but I can’t bring the aircraft down with me.”

Just to be clear here - the staffing and pay don't have anything to do with the number of times an aircraft is communicated with during a period of time.

From an ATC'er:
It is partially based on a complex formula involving number of operations, type of airspace, number of airfields in the airspace, mountainous terrain, etc. In the terminal area an arrival or departure counted as a single event, whereas a fly over counted for two events (arrival in the AOR and departure from the AOR for instance). Number of transmissions, or words spoken was not in the formula.
