Not that the pilot in this example would ever make a mistake

Are you serious? Let the captain get violated? The crew as a whole are violated. Me thinks I sense a troll here.

I think it was air Korea that flew into a mountain because the crew didn’t want to offend an overbearing captain

Out of curiosity, was the offender correct about not being required to show you his all his documents?

For example on the 717 every time you are within 1000' of your assigned altitude the airplane loudly announces "Altitude!" In the 88 (if I remember correctly) that means you just deviated 300 feet from your current altitude! First time I heard that in the sim I wondered what just happened. So I always briefed jumpseaters ahead of time that no, we didn't just have an altitude deviation every time he hears that.

It’s funny you mention that. I have three years hard time on the mad dog from years ago. My first few times jumpseating on the 717, when I heard the “altitude” call, I thought uh-oh. Then I looked and realized everything was ok. I have a Pavlovian response the that female voice, sternly saying “altitude”.

Not sure what you mean by required. Doesn’t matter if you work for the same company. It’s the captains jumpseat and if he/she wants to see your documents that’s their right.

Ha. I remember when I was on the DC-9. We had a super nice younger Compass FO on the Jumpseat. About 20 minutes into the flight, he leaned up and said something like, "I'm ashamed to admit this, but I have no idea what's going on up there."

A generational loss of steam-gauge skills.

Good luck finding anyone under 40 who knows how to do HSI/VOR/TACAN radial/DME point-to-point navigation, calculate crosswind component using their TAS and crab angle, heads rise and tails fall, etc.

Flew an entire flight the other night, takeoff to landing, without once engaging the AP (remained below RVSM). My Captain was terrified.

Have your horse riding skills been kept up?

Hell, that was 2007 and I came from an RJ. I had to ask the instructor to stop the sim at some point in training because we were both so totally lost on a DME arc we had no idea where we were. I absolutely loved that airplane when I learned to fly again, but it's a very perishable skill. Had an -88 with no FMS for 3 legs last trip. I'll say again, it's a very perishable skill. On top of that, the dispatchers didn't seem to understand why they couldn't file us direct to a fix and the controllers didn't seem to understand why we couldn't take shortcuts without help.

I did appreciate the ZTL controller who gave us "fly Heading 270, direct Little Rock VOR when able."

If you have to break out an E6B and start plotting crosswind components, you've probably got bigger problems going on.

I probably wouldn't go so far as to ask you to turn the AP on, but if it was a leg longer than about 25 minutes, it would kind of irritated me having to do all of that extra PM work. He probably wasn't terrified. He was probably just annoyed.
