That’s concerning. Seems you two should have talked about it more. Captain should have said, “Hey, you’re really blowing it here. I’m pretty concerned about the large deviations.” Or, you could have said, “You seem pretty uncomfortable, would you prefer I reconnect the autopilot?”

Either way, doesn’t sound like a cohesive cockpit or anything to come trumpet about on the internet.

There is something about papers, pencils floating in mid air that is mildly discomforting.

Hadn’t ever had an auto-throttle until I started this airline gig a bit over two years ago. Had been on the line maybe six months when I flew a leg from EWR to TPA with a broken AT. Can’t count the number of times I thought “why isn’t this thing slowing down?, “why are we going so slow”, etc. then realizing “oh yeah, that’s MY job!”. Amazing how fast you get used to the automation.

Flew a jet for 10 years without AT then last week flew 3 legs with the AT deferred. It's amazing how easily that skill degrades but encouraging how quickly it comes back.

That’s such a great point. More pilots should probably think along these lines vs “my manual says I can hand fly, and this guy is ‘scared’. But instead of addressing it with the Captain, I’ll continue to hand fly”.

also when the pilot is hand flying, it doubles the workload for the PNF. This can be an issue when tired/in busy airspace/etc. Use your good judgement. Don't hand fly the last 100 miles into Hong Kong after a 12 hour flight just to prove you can.

for fear of offending moderators I'll just recommend looking up floating in the urban dictionary.
If you're from Utah, you won't need to look it up.

There is a certain beauty to the sun shining through the hovering cloud of coffee, but the burn of it landing on your face really brings you back to the present.

I’m no expert, but I think the oscillations of the plane would eliminate that kind of floating...
