Default Memphis radar outage

Was anybody flying during the radar and telephone outage? I read that pilots were using their cell phones to get vectored.

Oh yeah!!!! This was fun, coming out of Indiana to get to Hot Springs Arkansas. We were just southwest of Indy when we got a re-route via St. Louis, then SGF(Springfield MO), then direct. By the time we criss-crossed, and were only 40nm out of SGF did they turn us direct. They barely had the freq. up by the time we got there, maybe a 5 minute lead time. It all worked out, but cost us 30 extra minutes in a TBM

Wow, a huge event that really effected our National Airspace System, you got to your destination safely and only a little behind and you are ****ed that you had to go out of your way. The controllers busted there ass that day to keep all of you safe and you seem to be angered that you had to go STL.

When a road is closed and you have to take a detour, does it make you mad?

Simmer down there- I don't think he was really ****ed about the extra delay- and I'm sure that we can all agree that the controllers did a great job. But the truth is, its a sad statement that this event even happened.

The real question is why was the road closed? Because the road is being improved, or because the road is in such sorry condition (due to mismanagement and failure to upkeep) that it can't be used any more...

Everybody got there safely this time. But next time we might not be as lucky.

Sorry my sarcasim doesn't show on the computer screen. 30 minutes in the air is at least 30 more minutes in the air in a sweet plane, unfortunately it was the company I had in the cockpit that had me wishing I was on the ground, back home, etc.... 30 min in the air is chump change to the amount of time that I'm sure 99% of us pilots are actually delayed on the ground due to our pax or customers!!! I'm really easy to get along with, sorry my post didn't come out the way I really wanted it. Still don't know why it shut down though.

Sorry that I jumped down your throat, it has been a really long year in the ATC world. The outage was caused by a newer type equipment, (Really the start of NEXGEN, before the FAA started calling it that), the equipment is replacing our old communication lines, taking it from a analog line to digital or broadband. I believe it failed because the FAA put cost over safety, not building all the fail safes that the analog had, partly due to cost, but also because the agency is not having controllers assist in designing any of the needs for this new technology. That’s right at this point NEXGEN is being designed by supervisor’s and engineers, not the folks who actually use any of the equipment. The users, you all, should be asking about NOW-GEN and what they are doing before we jump down that NEX-GEN road.
