Remember those reports a few years ago about a SR-71 replacement that was seen flying and had strange "diamond" effects in the exhaust plume. Look at the video again.

Diamonds are seen wherever exiting flow develops shocks, such as on an afterburner equipped engines. The light is from photons getting knocked off the molecules as they make the turn through the shocks.

Great link, I enjoyed the review.

"...Passing through this normal shock wave causes the temperature of the flow to increase, igniting any excess fuel present in the exhaust making it burn. It is this burning fuel that makes the Mach disk glow and become visible to create the ring pattern."

Combustion is a reaction involving a reduction of energy state that involves shedding photons, heat, and so on. What's interesting to note is that it takes raw fuel to do this, which is why less efficient engines like ramjets and those with afterburners will tend to produce mach diamonds.
