Default Four people to get a possible 20 years in jail for laser pointer

What kills me is that these people after attempting to distract commercial flights sat around and then hit the police chopper with the laser. Also they had drugs in the car big surprise.

You probably have to be on drugs to say "Hey, for fun tonight, let's drive out to the airport and point this laser at airplanes."

I don't understand why someone would do that. It too me just seams like plane ignorance.

Would it be possible to put a layer of laser eliminating glass/plastic behind the regular windshield, like laser safety goggles but bigger?

We should have a Predator UAV carrying an Hellfire-C laser-guided missile patroling the area instead.

Go ahead and point a laser at that ya dork.

I know, I know... laser source v. target. Just a simple reprograming.

Laser energy is light...if you block light, you can't see out the windows.

It is possible to make a material where you can turn on a tint rapidly, this is being used in new airplanes for pax windows to replace the window shades. But I doubt such a device could react quickly enough...they depend on the mechanical motion of tiny crystals in the material. While LCDs have pretty quick respone times, the speed of light is hard to beat...

It only takes a fraction of a second for a high-power laser to dazzle, even damage, the retina.

I like the predator idea...

It's possible to block lasers without blocking out all light, that's how these goggles work:

Just put those on the windshield and you're good to go

How do they work? Are they polarized? That would not work for cockpit windows...it would make other airplanes invisible at some angles.

I've used them before, but I'm not sure how they work. I'm a pilot not an engineer .

If blocking laser energy were that simple, then every military guy would wear a pair of magic laser-blocking eyewear.

Unfortunately, it's not.

Laser eye protection is only able to block specific wavelengths of laser energy. You can obtain different glasses that block different wavelengths, but there is no one-stop-shop solution.

There's some good information at the bottom of this old-ish article.
