And not surprisingly, after a hundred years or so, the government school system is displaying the classic symptoms of socialism-as they could be observed in the economy of the terminal Soviet Union.”



Even though I attended a public school district with a large share of teachers that would openly express their social/political agendas and their disgust with The America Way. I grew up with the understanding that socialism, specifically the Soviet Union's modus operandi, was bad.



Socialists bad - Capitalists good.



Lately, what has happened to our Federal government (bailouts, politicians defining what used to be perks as rights, etc.)?

No confusion here. A monopoly, whether held by the state or a corporation is never going to offer a product that will compare to those produced under a system of free competition.
We are now looking at a whole string of failures brought on by government monopolies in education, retirement, health care, postal service, and home loans. Without competition or a need to meet standards of quality and economic efficiency the product produced ends up being one that no rational person would purchase unless forced to do so.

If you want to see how it all ends, do a few searches on the Detroit Public Schools. This year their 1.1 Billion (yes, that's with a B) budget is 100s of millions of dollars in the red. The HS graduation rate is going to be about 25% this year. 16,000 fewer students attend DPS this year than last--parents move out of the city, find a private school, or some alternative.

I am for separation of school and state.

Education is a local/state government issue and was never intended to be in the domain of the Federal Government.

That is what some agree calling it when bailing out capitalist companies. School systems are in decay, economic policies are abstract terms for the average person, and accountability is enforced in a schizophrenic manner. Meanwhile we have a presidential election campaign in full swing which pits two mental midgets against one another. Campaigns should be reformed to only allow each candidate to discuss him/herself, their merits and reasons why they should be elected as next President. Any kind of negative ads, mud slinging etc would have a penalty, say for kicks, the loss of one of your delegates in the electoral college. While this method is drastic, some of the ways in which we conduct these procedures are in need of an overhaul. Capitalism run amok without government controls is a bad thing, too much government interference is also be a bad thing. We haven't had that perfect blend or panacea for a few decades.
Corporations ( lobbies) have permeated the fabric of our government because the majority of Americans don't get involved. They care, however, don't care enough to do something about it. The percentage of voters that vote vs. the amount of eligible voters is staggering. Until people do get involved in politics and make their voices heard, there is no need for corporations and dead beat politicians to worry.
