Maybe your comment was tounge-in-cheek, but why why would this be false sense? Why sweat the details of massive debt when government programs will save you? Our grandchildren will be paying for the lunacy we've created in the last few months.
Bankruptcy used to be a disgrace - an utter failure - occasionally followed by appropriate drastic measures. Now it's just another tool used to bypass any accountability.

People do us all a favor, If you truely can afford a new car, without me having to bail you out later, do some research. I have a new Altima with a 4 banger, not the 6. My Altima gets about 36 Hwy/28 cty.( those are my numbers after 30,000 miles). I think its rated at 34Hwy. That average is pretty close to the Prius when you factor in highway driving with the motor running in the Prius. Most 4 cyls these days are almost as efficiant as the Prius. The only time the Prius has the inflated numbers you see in advertising is stop light to stop light in the CTY, on the battery. Ask any Prius owner. It is not a significant return for the cost of the toxicity of the battery pack when it is used up and ends up in a landfill. The Prius is a scam. I also have a Titan that gets crappy milage (13/18), but hey I only drive it on saturdays when I'm looking for a Prius to run over.....

Thank you for this great post. Fuel efficient cars are great, however we still need to agressivly drill for oil here in the U.S.A. You my friend are a Patriot.

EVERYTHING has to be replaced. New products have to be produced. Whether it is that old light bulb being replaced for a newer one that is all twisted, I said this in a previous post. Of course it takes resources to build a new car. What more efficient product does not? New cars will be made. New cars will be sold. I got rid of a LESS efficient car for a cleaner and MORE efficient car. I have affected what I can affect - and I will hopefully be doing it cleaner and more efficiently; plus this car is much safer than my Mustang too!

ONLY the engine and the drivetrain can not be REUSED, but that doesn't mean that other parts can't be recycled, and I'm sure the engine and drivetrain could be recycled or they will be part of a very nice golf course - maybe even on an AFB somewhere!! The salvage company probably makes out better than anyone else. My Mustang weighed 4,500 lbs (2.24 tons) and IF I get that check from them for the value of my salvage (minus the $50 the dealer gets for "administrative purposes") then they will probably have paid me $75 per ton. What is that - $168.75? I'm pretty sure that they will be able to salvage parts off that car worth more than that!

As far as another gov't program running us into further into debt - well I have already given examples in previous posts of other programs that don't seem to be helping me much on a personal level and are costing many times the cost of this one. Like I said -this one worked out good for me and alot of others so far. Let's hope this program ends up with some much need good intentions when it is all said and done.

As far as you using the program - if you go down to a dealer and then meet all the requirements for the program and CHOSE NOT TO TAKE THE REBATE - then I'll be the first to pat you on the back and say that you are a person who can stand up for his beliefs. In this case - I happen to have different beliefs I guess.

Btw - if I came across gov't rebate or tax incentives that would save me money on new appliances, windows, heating systems, washer and dryers, light bulbs, or even changing the temperature setting in my house (when I get one) - I'll be taking advantage of every one available - am I'm pretty sure that most others would too.
I saw on the news that the cars are being thrown away ... not salvaged, not used for parts. In fact, I've seen this a couple of places. Hence, the big dumpsters outside the dealerships with the cars in them.

No...the law reads that the scrap dealer can salvage any parts EXCEPT the engine and drivetrain. I've seen the news stories with pictures of the cars/trucks in the trash bin too. Good for advertising.

The more I learn about this, the more I think this is the most ridiculous program I've ever seen.

They are purposely destroying the engines and drive trains. Those parts are already in short supply and are needed.

In essence, this is going to raise the prices on the used car market and thus, the poor are once again going to get railroaded by the law of unintended consiquences due to a stupid government program.

And still, this doesn't address that we are BORROWING this money to pay for these cars. The government is robbing us and because some of us are getting a new car, they think it's a great deal.

Sorry USMC, I don't agree with you. If something isn't broken, it doesn't need to be replaced. If you need a new vehicle, fine, go buy one and let the used car go to use by someone who needs it.

We are the epitome of the throw away society.
