USMCFLYR,
It is a commonly used term here. Look it up.
From Wilkipedea:
An indentured servant was typically a young, unskilled laborer contracted to work for an employer for a fixed period of time, typically three to seven years, in exchange for transportation, food, clothing, lodging and other necessities during the term of their indenture.[1] They included men and women; most were under age 21, and most became helpers on farms or house servants. They were not paid wages.
Totally applies to a regional pilot who is under a training contract to repay their own cost of training.

Your underhanded jab has nothing to do with your current rant.

I honestly was not trying to instigate anything with you. The term just fits and is commonly used here to the point of becoming a cliche.
I am sorry if it upsets you. Try flying for a regional for peanuts under a draconian training contract then tell me that the term does not completely apply.

I have a young friend going to a very expensive out of state private university right now. He was doing a technical degree but switched to media arts or something along those lines. I was able to talk him into taking a one year sabbatical to work and establish local residency. Still not cheap, but at least he's not going to blow his entire inheritance on a BA, which won't provide the same ROA as an engineering degree.
Some people will always have the means to pay, but for the average kid the cost needs to come WAAAAY down, or we need to go to a european-style system where the college-bound are identified earlier in school and groomed for that. The rest get to focus on votech, and get robust votech training either during or after HS.
I don't think it's a good idea to just cut kids lose at age 18 to go fill out a Mc-Application. There are too many opportunities available in an industrial society which require a little training to get started.
But I don't see why college costs have gotten so high...too much pay and benefits for the staff? Too many fancy new buildings? Too many subsidies for this, that, and the other thing?

It looks like it's all schools - I recently read an article about how prepaid state sponsored 529 plans are failing because of the rise in tuition. The rate of tuition increase was 135% in only five years, which is clearly not sustainable.
When you consider time in school, debt, and loan repayment - vocational technical training is becoming a much more attractive alternative to a traditional four year degree.

I can see a near future where much of our children's education is conducted online. My kids seem to like the computer based training much better and it leaves much more time for other things like lawn mowing and doing the dishes.

I don't have to try to fly for a Regional. Thanks for the offer though.
Training contracts? I've had them my whole career - both in the military AND civilian ranks.
I'm sure that in your future business ventures when it is required that you pay for your employees expensive (and mobile) training that you will not expect them to work for you after completing such training. I guess one of your most used phrases of "Return on Investment" (or the lack thereof) won't be a primary concern of yours as a self-employed bussinessman.
You really are going to be one heck of a boss!

My kids are home-schooled .... and accomplish more than their traditional sit down school peers.

You have access to all of the school records for all other students in your children's peer group from all over the country? You are obviously a proud parent......but my word......really? Just by what measure do you make such claims?

Dear USMCFLYR,
Because you asked:
Yes, our kids take the same annual academic tests that their peers do at public school and they are doing better than average. And our kids only need a few hours a day to gain the same educational benefit. Therefore I can say that they are being evaluated against every other kid in the state at least.
Additionally:
I agree that a military commitment is one heck of a training contract however at least the military provides fair compensation and much better benefits than the regionals do. I do not think it is indentured servitude at all but more of a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Dear Mr. USMCFLR,
Did you see this post? It is listed in the Flight Training Section.

From somebody that in aviation is the other end of the spectrum from skyhigh, in that I was hired at a legacy at age 26 and have been a captain for twenty years and int'l widebody capt. for 14years . And I have to say that Sky High is right! Don't ping on him, he is correct, for all the decay to the profession that has gone on, what happens is you will pay a lot of dues and when it is your time to collect, corporate america will find a way to not deliver. Beyond that I doubt that your education will give you a decent return on investment.

I am not the only one who holds these opinions about aviation. More are coming over all the time. You too have wisely chosen to avoid a life in commercial aviation. You are one of us !!
