Made DC9 captain at 28, but had been flying since 16 so had the hours +3500. My brother in law was captain in the same company on the 707 a few years earlier. I thought his achievement was greater than mine since the 707 was long haul with a very challenging route structure.

3.5 years, this thread is still alive:-). A friend of mine just made to Captain for A320 for a US carrier at 35. I know he is not that young, but given that he only got his PPL in 1999, it is a great achievement, no?
In China, it is a different story. Quite some young and low time captains.

This reply is about ancient history, but interesting.
In 1969 a friends father, aged 19, dropped out of college to accept a new hire position at Eastern Airlines. (His dad was a Captain there).
When he reached age 23 and got his ATP he was already senior enough to check out as Captain on the 727.
He was a Captain the rest of his career, and acquired type ratings in all their aircraft.
He stayed with Eastern until the big strike that led to their demise.
