Lots of people spend everything they have as soon as they get it, plus spend every bit of credit they get their hands on as soon as they get it. Many of those people are airline pilots too though.

I used to know a first year regional FO who leased a brand new BMW 325i.
I think he said that his payments were around $800/month.
Never really understood why you would spend half a month's paycheck on a car, but to each his own, not really my business.
You don't really know a person's personal finance situation, and you probably shouldn't assume it either way.

To some degree, yes. I know a pilot (major airline Captain) that sweats his budget. But he has a very expensive special needs child. Other than that he drives cheap used cars and lives in a modest middle class house and I've never seen him really splurge on anything other than a nice dinner out once in a while. I know another pilot (very senior major airline LCA making big money) that is 2 paychecks away from liquidation at all times due to rediculous personal choices trying to run with a much higher class than he can. And I know a ton of pilots that feed the college machine no matter the cost, including insanely expensive degrees in completely worthless "fields" with zero (zero) ROI for their progeny, plus brand new cars, spending money and single occupancy appartments for "daddy's little girl" just to extend their childhoods and live vicariously through them or whatever.

I agree its not directly our business. But we would be foolish to ignore some of the underlying causes of our own collective short term thinking that manifest itself into a major weekness that our managements are acutely aware of. They know how we think and what drives us and why better than we do much of the time, and that puts us at a disadvantage big time. Our collective financial ineptitude directly serves to weaken our collective financial potential. When you can't say no, when you can't walk away and simply have to take the deal, you will get a worse deal. Every. Singe. Time.

I guess this thread has run it's course. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Someone please just mention Gojets and put this thing out of its misery.

No wonder I don't have a boat! I'm north of (as in, past) 48 and my wife shows fully naked half the time. She ain't 57 either.

And she owns a two-wheeled, V-powered toy. Not a Harley; a Ducati. Red. Both of them. Real red. Like her hair.

ha ha I always loved flying with a first year regional FO who complains that he makes no money and can't afford food on overnights on regional wages, yet drives a brand new BMW, has a brand new Bose noise canceling headset, brand new leather flight kit, and drops 2 trips a month to non rev all over the world....oh and an iPad/pod/phone!
