I had honestly never heard of Linux before you posted this. I just did a google search and that will be what I will do when I get home. From my basic search it looks fairly complex to get it up and running but I really have nothing to lose.
How do I get my drivers to work once I get linux? It seems when you look for drivers your options are either windows XP.Vista,or 7.
Can I still use firefox and other programs such as gimp (free photoshop) etc?

As far as games and other specific apps, you would have to google each one...they will not automatically work unless someone has gone to the trouble to make them work.

Try Ubuntu or CENT OS...Ubuntu is excellent if you are starting out...You can download the ISO, burn it to a DVD and run it right off the DVD (as a live installation) without installing to your HD to try it out...It contains a extensive driver database and provides a lot of resources, software, etc...
If all you do is email, internet, word processing, etc....Its perfect and lightweight...

I really like Mint when I had it.
And to USMC, just like aviation, there's a TON of LINUX message boards. All of them dealing with the specific deriv of LINUX you may try out. As well the standard FAQ's, help section, etc etc etc.
And just like on here, if you use a LINUX message board, the search function is you friend ;-)

While youre investigoogling, make sure to check out any one of the plethora of YouTube vids. All the way from the install walk troughs to just the test drive demo varieties.
Granted, it's been a while since I used a Linux platform, but when I did, there was a program called "Songbird" that was pretty good if you're interested in music management. There's probably some better ones now.

Probably the better flavours are Ubuntu linux and Open SUSE linux. They both have agree and click installations and have most drivers pre installed. for printers and other peripherals.
You may well have to end up installing other drivers, but the system will prompt you and is set up to look for the right drivers in the right places.
Home | Ubuntu
openSUSE.org
hope this helps

It does help, thank you.
Brief hiatus as I've been working on it between trips, life, house, kid,.......
CD drive doesn't even show up under "my computer" and isn't even listed under devices. Suppose I need to make that work so I can load Linux.

That's odd, the generic drivers should work for most models at least for CD-read.
Sure it's plugged in?
Open the case, check the wires, and look at the make/model. Then go try to find a driver for it.

What rickair said.
I've had that exact problem before. Make sure all the cables are plugged in.
Note: unplug the power cord, and then touch a metal object (the tower of your desktop should work well) to ground yourself, and then begin taking a look.
You'll have a power cord to the CD/DVD drive (looks like a large version of a USB connection to your iPhone), and a cord that connects it to your mother board (long and skinny). If both of those are plugged in there are a few other more detailed trouble shooting tips out there as well.
Good luck!!
