Not in this context. It means everyone gets treated the same.

Unfortunately many people use a corrupted meaning for these words and that is where the confusion comes from.
Tell us about it. Imagine all the discriminatory conclusions you can draw if you start with a false premise.

That is exactly what I am talking about, we have equal rights but it does not follow that everyone will be treated the same or will have equal outcomes. This is not discrimination, it is reality

The false conclusion is that equal rights generate equal outcomes, outcomes are the result of many factors but are not rights.

Another false conclusion is that equal rights in theory means people will be treated the same by law. Not so, some laws are applied to some and not others in the same way-some lose their rights and some try to restrict the rights of others.

There is a huge gap between equal rights or treatment and equal outcomes, this seems to be where much of the confusion lives.

For example, expanding the rights of one group at the expense of another group does not constitute an expansion of rights for the group as a whole. I am sure you can think of many examples.

If a set of laws applies to one group, but another group is exempted then rights have been diminished in the group as a whole.

This applies to events too. Which is why 2,000 people at a gun banning march get better media coverage than 500,000 people at a prolife march.

What makes America great? Vast resources? "Endless growth?" George Bush was born on third base... he didn't hit a triple... you and I born on 2nd... no double....

While other countries have social and status classes, America has economic classes. Sure it is possible to transcend economic classes but that has become more difficult lately. And as always, throughout history, 10% rule the 90%. America is no different. While Americans consume, the 10% rule.....

America currently exploits third world nations so we can live an unsustainable lifestyle. It would take the resources of 3 or more planet Earths to for the entire world to live like we do.... so what is it going to be? Are we going to adjust to a lesser lifestyle?
You might also say third world nations exploit American demand for their goods and services to better their situation. This may also be called opportunity.

Most people living in the industrialized west are the 1% of the world, they got there by having a better system of building and competing. Not exactly something to be ashamed of, nor is losing out in the competition. Losers really can't blame the winners for doing their best. No such thing as endless growth and winners change over time, last seasons losers may be next seasons winners.

Most of us here have been born on third base, but most of us have not seen enough of the world to understand why or how.
Some believe that all success is rooted in exploitation, but nothing could be further from the truth-exploitation is usually the quickest road to failure.

You said a mouthful there .

You learn about equality in history and civics, but you find out life is not really like that.

That perspective is all relative.

I would argue that if you were born in the USA, you were born in the top 1% compared to the rest of the world, no matter what your "class".

In fact, this conversation reminds me of an ex-pat friend of mine who lived in Asia/China for 20 years before returning for a visit home with a Buddist monk he had befriended. A week into the visit, the monk remarked,

"It is amazing how well fed and fat your homeless people are."

Great post, and sadly all too true.

Jeffrey Sachs
opined this position... however the ability to determine the terms would be revolutionary...

Valid point...

might we be on that road?

What makes America great is FREEDOM!

But there are forces amongst us that chip away at our freedom every day. However, those forces will meet "resistance" over in my neighborhood.

Because this I will defend.
