Default Austin bbq tour

This morning we flew Alaska over to start our bbq tour. Our intention is to eat at a different place each night then spend the last night at Lake LBJ with my sister and her family.

The captain came out of the cockpit to make the announcement normally done by the FO. He said push was delayed because the FO was in the lav taking a dump!

Nevertheless we got to Austin 30 minutes early.

Any recommendations on a bbq place that we should not miss?

Prepare to wait in line.

If you have some time try the Salt Lick out in Driftwood...BYOB.

Either wait in line at Franklin or drive to/from Driftwood = same time.

Franklin > Salt Lick

You really should get to Franklin at LEAST 2 hours before the place opens.

Iron Works in downtown is pretty good too; almost physically ran into Rick Perry there one time.

According to Yogi: "The line is so long that nobody goes there any more."

Kreutz BBQ in Lockhart, TX (about 30 miles south of Austin). It is the original German beef bbq. No sauce used. All flavors come solely from the wood and ash.

Overslept today so by the time we got ready to go it was late. Too late for Franklin's.

First stop of this tour was Stiles Switch. Pork ribs are the best. Brisket could be more moist but the smoke line made up for any actual or perceived deficiencies. Their corn casserole was warm and slightly sweet, just like my mother in law used to make hers in rural Kansas. Brought tears to my husband's eyes.

Several restaurants are closed on Mondays. Will have to plan out the next one.

Weather is absolutely perfect. However I'm still partial to clouds and rain of the Northwest.

If your going out to LBJ take it a step further and drive out to Llano, TX for Coopers BBQ, one of my favorite fly in places. Also don't miss the pies at Bluebonnet cafe in Marble Falls.

La Barbecue food truck is pretty good. Line gets long too but a weekday would be ok. Cooper's in llano is great but quite a drive from austin. If everywhere has a line check out Rudy's. Local chain and often attached to a gas station but it's pretty darn good.

The real question is where do WE eat in the nw?

Thanks for the recommendations. We are back in the Austin airport now. So this trip had us at Stiles Switch, Stubbs and Salt Lick out in Driftwood. Had to change up a little by going to Chinatown on Lamar.

On Thursday stopped at Rudy's on the way to san antonio. Friday we had my home cooking befote heading out to lake lbj for the night. Didn't have time to go to Llano. The whole day today was spent putting a bunk bed together and other assorted things that only family agree to do. Our reward was brunch at the venerable Blue Bonnet cafe which has been serving food and pies since 1928.

It's raining here much like home. Great trip and lots more bbq places to try. Next time we'll drive down and spend more time. Still cheaper than that brand new home we toured in Rim Rock. The one with the custom gourmet kitchen. Yummy.

I love Texas!

Hey glad you enjoyed it! Good call on the blue bonnet cafe. Next time I've got a good Biergarten for you to try.
