Lightbulb Across the US by train for $200+

This blogger writes about how he can travel from NY to SFO on Amtrak for $213.

Has anyone ever done this?

In the 1980s, I took the Empire Builder frpm Seattle to Chicago then switched to the Lake Shore Limited to New York. It was a wonderful almost life changing experience. Since then my husband and I have been on the California Zephyr, the Southwest Chief and many others.

I just checked Amtrak. Seattle to NY on the empire builder and lake shore limited can be had for $186 one way per person. If I can get my husband to watch our dogs I'm booking it!

I did DEN to SLC on Amtrak once a couple of years back, and it was amazing. Only $80 too.

Food for thought - did this just before high school 30 years ago, so take it for what it's worth, but after paying for meals on a train for two days, it was as expensive as a flight. And that's to sleep slightly reclined. Go do it for the experience, but probably won't save enough money to be worth the pain

The DEN SLC segment of the California Zephyr is a great stretch of track!

Sleeper train Chicago to New Orleans. Depart around 8pm arrive about a mile from Bourbon street at 3pm the next day. About $500 for 2 that makes a great weekend trip (fly back). It is way more fun then the mile high club.
