Does anyone know where I can find information on how many furloughed pilots each airline has? I specifically want to know about Mesa Airlines.

They have called my husband and invited him to interview. He is a recent grad from the Farmington Mesa Pilot Development program, which for those of you who have not heard, will be shutting its doors soon.

My husband is worried that the interview is a sham and that they're just holding interviews so that they can fulfill their obligation of the "guaranteed interview" and then can wash their hands of the school.

If they have 200 furloughed pilots, that would make me think that they have no intention of hiring these poor graduates...

 

Probably not...but if he's got nothing else going on why not go. Worst case, it's good interview practice when a better airline someday calls. Actually, worst case is getting hired and realize how bad they treat their employees. BTDT.

 

Do some of reading on Mesa. They are known for really poor employee treatment, and this can impact a career. If an interview is about judgment, how to you talk around the decision to work for a company you know will treat you so poorly? Ignorance will not be an excuse. I've seen this on panels be the deciding factor for folks. There are probably better options.

ALPA.org probably has stats on current furlough status. Lots of little hidden "sub-companies". Good luck.

For Mesa, click Major-National-LCC. Select Mesa, and in the "Pilot" section, you'll see a total headcount, and number on furlough.

 

For Midwest. just put down "ALL".

 

What a load of........ I flew at Mesa and I've been hired after each interview I've had since! I know numerous ex Mesa pilots in very good positions now. The youngest ever Captain at Fed Ex was ex Mesa. Mesa QOL does suck but I will tell you after their "sink or swim" upgrade training mentality training everywhere else has been a breeze!!

This should help you out with your question. You can also search all the other airlines as well. To answer your other question I don't see Mesa hiring anyone else anytime soon. They're wanting to go down to around 800 pilots total with the loss of the United flying next year, which means they are looking at around 300-400 more pilots to furlough on top of what they have now. The regionals will be hiring within the next few years but your husband is going to have to except the fact that there are 6000 + pilots on furlough/Out of jobs (ie: Midwest, Aloha, ATA) that are going to be hired before anyone from the flight schools will be hired. Not to say that it will be impossible, if that's what he wants to do then he can't give up, but it is going to be very difficult. His best bet is to try and instruct for a while, or try and get a job towing banners or anything to where he is not paying to build flight time. It's pretty cutthroat out there right now and I do wish you both the best.

 

On top of the guys furloughed from the regionals 5-6K, add in the guys from Majors, the ones from the 135's ie Cargo, you look at 10K pilots looking for work. Now add in all the guys who will have been building time during this, you have to factor in the people who are building time, like the CFI's, crop dusters, and the jumper pilots. There are a few hundred guys out there flying jumpers building turbine time in Otters, Caravans, Skyvans, Kingairs, and Pac's, that will come into the job market with 2,000+ hours with 1,000+ of that time turbine.

 

Yeah, the experience really affected my getting hired at UPS(and several others here too).
