Hey Palm, I agree with commuting being totally possible. Im just going off the few FO's and Capt's I know that said its really hard given the type of schedule you have as a starting FO and as a new Capt.

I honestly didnt think of those things either when I applied too. As I said above I'm good friends with folks there and have nothing but great things to say about the airline and have interacted with crews and all love the company. So why not join a family that is happy with who they work for??

 

They've been interviewing approximately 40 a week since mid June..... I interviewed the second week they held interviews and they probably had interviewed close to 80 by the end of my week...If I had to guess they have interviewed north of 300 for Phase I and II.. With alot more interviewing to go

 

Hawaiian is sort of the Fedex of passenger jobs these days... seems like they've got the pick of whom they want and they seem to (fairly or not) prefer locals.. I for one think it's a mistake to focus on locals since you should be hiring the absolute best you can get, quality, personality and everything else... a pilot knows and understands what's involved in commuting and relocation and many have already weighted and planned what they'd do if they're throwing in their app.... but that's just me, I'm not Hawaiian and I don't pretend to know what's best for them better than they do... just my .02$

 

To all who apply: we use pref bidding; junior pilots will NOT find their schedule easly commutable! If you're assigned the 717 it would be nearly impossible. If you're on a widebody, it will be difficult at best. Please don't listen to people who don't know what they're talking about. You won't be happy with your lifestyle when you find commuting is not really plausable. Don't make career decisions based on misinformation!

You may be able to live in a crash pad for a few years, and IF the company grows and your seniority position improves, ultimately you might have other alternatives. But you would be making a mistake to think that you'll be happy commuting with a junior schedule in your first few years.

Bottom line: if Hawaiian represents the right opportunity for you, plan to move to Hawaii...enjoy the islands and their special culture! Grow personally and professionally....the rest will follow!

Anyway, I don't buy it for a second. So what about how selective they can be? So what about the cost of living? Neither even implies that a reason that they don't provide transport and accommodations is because of this worldwide interview/vacation scammer conspiracy.

So now to try to get the thread back on topic......I'm still in the pre phase 3 holding patter, how is everyone else doing?

I agree. Sorry to continue the tangent. As for the commuting questions, lemme tell you what the most junior A330 FO's got for september:

looks like one bid max cred. and took fewer days off (10), got 6 LAS 3 day's worth 11:45 each and a Haneda 3 day worth 15:40 = 86:10

another bid min cred and got 13 days off, 4 LAS 3 days (one goes into Oct.), 2 LAX 2-days worth like 11 hrs, and a SAN 3 day for 12 = 75 hrs.

the LAX show time was 0700, LAS 1400 (release 0515) or 2130, Haneda 1805, SAN 1335. all besides that LAS @ 0515 got released around 12 or 1300 in HNL. So, you could probably catch mid day flights back to mainland after your trips, but not likely to commute in the same day (which I wouldn't want to do anyway). sorry if that was confusing.

 

thanks for that info PurpleCRJ... since you seem to know what you're talking about.. can you also tell us how easy it is to get the days off as a block when you're junior? So maybe you can take all 12-1x days off and then fly out and backs from HNL or something? thanks

 

If the most junior FO's received a line, who is pulling reserve duty?

I got the email for Phase 3 today. They want me to be there on the morning of the 28th, yes in 2 days.
