The best place to fly in East Africa for lower-time guys is out of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. They have a lot of expats.

In any CAA (a foreign type of FAA), you will need a type rating in each aircraft you fly. For most CAAs, you take an Air Law Exam, which is not too difficult, and you get your local validation/license (ATPL). BUT, in Kenya, that only gets you a 6 month temporary license. U then need to take the CONVERSION exam, which is a *****. It is 100 questions, and comes from the JAA 14? subject areas. I studied the JAA question bank, which had 20,000+ questions in it. The Capt I mostly flew with had a JAA license, and took 3? tries to pass it.

Kenya is not to keen on foreign pilots, and they don't make it easy at all to fly there. I never heard of this outfit, but I was at Jomo Kenyatta, and these guys must be out of Wilson Airport (the old NBO airport). I did know some of the operators there, but not this one.

I would go on pprune.org and ask in the "African Aviation" board and see what you can find out. It is a BIG adventure. For the job I had, there were, basically, 9 guys from outside Africa that tried to do it. I was the only guy that stayed for more than a couple of months. It is a LOT different. If you are up for it, it could be really interesting and you may like it a lot.

If you want some more Kenya CAA info pm me.

Type rating is given for a pilot who does not have an endorsement on a type of an aircraft if that makes it easier to understand. We only require low hour pilots.FAA license holders will be required to convert their licenses. This process takes one to two weeks depending on ones effort.

We are situated at Wilson airport. Contact KCAA for further verification.

When I went on an African adventure in 2009, I was very pleasantly surprised.
I found Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zanzibar to be among the most "livable" in Africa.
Although most of my travel was by local bus, I flew as a passenger on several small companies.
The ATR is a popular plane there.
The crews were a mix of Europeans and locals.
If you are very flexible about your lifestyle and like adventure, I would recommend trying it out.

asante sana!

As with all things aviation, even a 206 job is a pain in the @@#. This would be fun though!!

I was in Kenya back in late 2012. It is indeed a beautiful country. I know they have several regional carriers flying equipment from dash-8s to CRJ's. The culture there very much gave the impression that knowing the right people can much propel you into any position you want. Obviously this is true anywhere, but regulation is enforced to a much lesser extent than that of the US or countries of the like. I was in Eldoret for 2 weeks, and got to know one of the managers for the regional "Jetlink" fairly well over the course of the visit. At the end of my visit he essentially told me all I would have to do is let him know if I wanted to come back and fly for the airline and the position would be mine. As much as I would like to, I haven't been back to check if the offer was genuine...

I go into Johannesburg about once a month. I always hear what sounds like the Comair call sign on the radio. No relation to the now defunct Com Air from CVG I'm sure, but who are they, what do they fly and where is their HQ?
