What's happening at Horizon and Jets?

I don't think we're all that short... yet. Crew Scheduling is not shy about covering jet trips with the Q400, as long as they're under approximately 800 miles. About a year ago, I got tagged with Seattle - Fresno - Seattle in the Q400. It was a beautiful day to fly and the passengers didn't seem to be traumatized by a 2.5 hour flight in a turboprop.
One of the big problems with staffing in the E175 is that many of the senior captains and check airmen are commuters. A lot of these guys would be happy to cover a turn, but they're in the wrong place to do it and Crew Scheduling doesn't have time to deadhead them to Seattle. It also seems strange that we've only got four available reserves out of a contingent of 90 E175 pilots. Poor planning?

After further investigation, the FLICA E175 CA numbers include the PDX satellite base. There are about 40 captains there. 90ish in SEA. The rest are management, training peeps and upgrades in progress. but yes, it is strange to see our E175 CA reserve list go from a regular 10-15 per day to barely 3 or 4.
Throw in the government shutdown and inability to conduct Fed rides for upcoming captain upgrades/transitions (and check pilots)...... all airlines will suffer. #murica

Naturally, I let the scheduling call go to voicemail. I don't mind helping out when I am free, but with the recent spike in short staffing, I just don't want to risk getting tagged with a multi day trip after "helping out" on a single turn trip.

Yeah, that doesn’t HAVE to be with a Fed. Your APDs can do those as well. Unless the Feds are trying to make a point and telling the APDs not to. Which is entirely possible right now.

There are a few new Line Check Pilots on the ERJ side waiting for a Fed which is required for their initial observation. Though, it's not super critical as there are enough LCPs..... for now.
If the seniority list is accurate, we have 4 APDs on the ERJ side (only 2 on the Q). A few recently left for the mothership.

There is a waiver the for the Chief Check Pilot to do FAA observation rides (mine was done by the former, former, former Chief Check Pilot).
Buuuuutttttt...the FAA has to sign it, no one at home for the FAA = no FAA observation.
I only know this because I had a captain upgrade get his FAA observation ride cancelled, and there was nothing that could be done.
