Horizon's New Guaranteed Interview
Did anyone else catch the announcement of Alaska's new guaranteed interview program for Horizon pilots? I am curious to hear everyone's thoughts. I have some concerns about the requirement to sign over all training and employment records. Why can't they just use PRIA info like everyone else?

That's right kids! If you're willing to sign over your private employee records, after 4 years of flying 7 leg days in a Q400 you might (might!) have a shot at working for the worlds most arrogant, lowest paid 737 operator and low cost carrier **ALASKA**!
This is the biggest slap in the face to Horizon yet. We've been making Air Group hundreds of millions of dollars over the years and they expect us to jump through all these extra hoops just for the mere chance of being part of "30% of the hiring."
So if you're a skywest, compass, or military pilot etc. you can skip all of this. Save your dignity and privacy and be part of the 70% who don't have to put up with this bull sh*t.

I was applying for another job a few years ago and was curious about "what kind" of records the company had on me. The answer? Pretty much everything. The company keeps at least three types of files on every pilot. The training records are available through PRIA. The other files contain routine stuff like yearly pay bumps and non-routine stuff like "coaching" (including a record of a discussion I had with one of the Assistant Chief Pilots regarding a fatigue call). My record was pretty clean, but there's a couple of guys here that probably have their own filing cabinet.
For years, there's been ugly rumors that Horizon has been sharing a record of fatigue calls and sick leave use with Alaska. I discussed the fatigue call issue with one of our safety program guys, but he was unable to determine whether this was happening (or not).
As others have pointed out, it's outrageous for Horizon pilots to have to supply any additional records that would NOT be required for applicants from other airlines or the military.

I don't know on what planet this is "Okay", but outside of normal records available through PRIA/etc...there shouldn't be any reviewing of my employment records. Other airlines, Delta/UAL/AA wouldn't be reviewing those records, so Alaska certainly has no business doing it. I'm quite sure they're not reviewing the employment records of Skywest/Compass/Endeavour pilot's they hire. This needs to be addressed ASAP. "

Frankly, no prospective pilot is going to sign up for three or four years in the right seat of the Q400 just because they might one day, maybe (maybe!) get an interview with Alaska. It's like a grocery store offering a "2-for-1" special on kitty litter. Only works if you have a cat. If the Air Group is serious about attracting highly qualified applicants, they should do the following: (1) Start all new hires at $40 an hour. (2) Get rid of the "seat lock" for First Officers. Right now, no one will come here because they don't want to get stuck in the Q400. (3) Offer a guaranteed FLOW THROUGH to Alaska Air, open to all interested Horizon pilots. See? I just solved your pilot shortage issue... You're welcome. :-) "

"We have a lot of very well qualified pilots here at QX whose only limitation keeping them from getting an interview at AS is not having a 4 year degree. In this pilot shortage environment, can Alaska really afford to uphold that for much longer? How about getting rid of that requirement for QX applicants? That seems like an easy enough concession to make at this point. Particularly considering that, unless a miracle happens, they will have to flush that requirement later anyways? Seems like a good thing to do now, while there still are pilots left."

Sir, I know you are doing everything you can to promote the hard working and devoted pilots at Horizon. It's just really unfortunate the people associated with hiring pilots at Alaska don't realize how much they demean Horizon pilots with their "jumping through hoops" attitude. Horizon pilots shouldn't even have to sit through an interview... And they definitely shouldn't have to schmooze the HR department at Alaska Airlines.

I think the absolute sham that has been pulled on the Horizon employees is finally surfacing.......It does not matter at all that The Alaska Air Group owns you.....They have strung you along to keep you feeling all warm and fuzzy all these years......Their actions are what Horizon employees should pay attention to not their schmarmy words.....You guys work for a regional airline called Horizon with a separate certificate......You are selling yourselves short buying into the I am Alaska crap.....
