At the risk of oversimplifying this whole thing, would something like this not be a cheap and easy way to determine if this is a fume event or not? The speaker kept mention carbon monoxide a standard byproduct of these events, along with all the other stuff.

What I took away was that CO is something we KNOW we are exposed to, but don't have sensors to detect it. (Proof of FAA/airline negligence)

The vaporized engine oil may not be accompanied by CO. I would love to have my blood screened for this crap, but then I'd have to tell the FAA if it came back positive. Then what?

Class action lawsuit against the manufacturers. I smelled this stuff for almost a decade on the CRJ. I want to know if I was exposed to it.

I'm concerned if your blood test is positive, what would that do to your class 1? If the FAA knew and was liable in court, they could start taking class 1 medicals from anyone who they damaged.

I think the feds would have to be bale to prove some sort of impairment from this. To do so would only further their liability.

I'd wonder though, how would such analysis compare with members of the general population. Are these fume exposures, outside of full blown fume events, doing greater harm or risking greater exposure than sitting in traffic on the 101 in LA for hours?

Will be interesting to see where some of these studies go.

It's not so much CO as it is the TCP and TOCP. They have oil that does not contain these harmful organophosphates but guess what...airlines don't want to spend the money, no surprise there. Aftermarket filters to capture VOC's should be hitting the market within a year or two. Many pilots are experiencing long term effects already and don't even know it. Most commonly reported effects of exposure are memory loss, headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness, tingling in arms and legs, imbalance and respiratory issues. Pilots brush off many of these issues as "getting older" but in reality the culprit is much worse. Generally with research that has been done, there has been extensive nerve damage in crew member's postmortem brain tissue where organophosphate poisoning has been suspected.

Recently ALPA put out guidance on the types of blood tests you can ask your doctor to conduct shortly after a fume event.

This is all the research I have compiled into one nice folder. For the naysayers, read all of that then come back to me.

Default Chief Pilot

Did anyone see the JFK Chief Pilot's email from yesterday?

His "research" seems to belittle anyone else's research.

It seems the company (by words of the chief pilot) isn't very much interested in finding the true cause. They seem to be resorting to "nothing to see here" tactics.
