Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Also FBK, at least when I was a van driver I made much less than minimum wage, and like a waitress, I depended on my good service and on time performance to EARN those tips. Taking a patron out to eat was against the rules btw, but I fudged them especially for the airline crews who stayed at our hotel.

FBK - I see in a later post that you tip servers and bartenders, and having been one yourself you say, you sometimes tip 50%!!! Can you explain the difference in attitude you have between servers and van drivers, or does it make a difference if you are eating or drinking at the hotel's restaurant and bar?

Tipping is out of control, I agree, but at least we ought to be correct in our motives if you decide against it.

Are you saying that hotel drivers and maids do not make at least minimum wage unlike waiters?

Are you still supposed to tip the stewardesses when buying beverages on the flights that take cash?

Just give the f/a a 10 spot and tell her to keep the change.

Using the logic that low income workers should be tipped (since they're busting their butts to make ends meet) should then mean first year FOs and even 2-5 year FOs should be tipped...along with FA, gate agents, etc.

I have Always tipped at least a dollar to the van driver for getting me there in one piece. But I would say tip however you feel like tipping or can afford. People that get up-tight about van driver tipping, probably need to find another hobby than being thy brothers keepers. Just my two cents.

I agree with this. If you can't afford it, don't tip. If that's the case, don't be a needy crew member and try handle your own bags.

First year regional FOs doing all 4 days could easily spend $300 a year in tips, which could be better spent on rent, food, student loans, etc.
