I'm on my way to PR tomorrow. Anybody know about the breaks around SJU or traveling by bus with a surfboard?
Also, I'm using a day bag with my board wrapped in towels and plan on checking it. Probably not the smartest option, but it's all I've got. Fedex wanted $150 to ship it down, and that's heavily discounted! Hopefully I won't have to do any patching on the other end.

Wow! That's a great idea! It's a tight squeeze even with towels though. My bag is 6'2 with a 6'1 board in it. If it doesn't work out too well, I have another board and lesson will be learned.
Should I check it at the ticket counter or attempt to bring it through TSA and check it at the gate? Any recommendations?
If I miss the morning flights, I'll need that night ride! haha

Rincon Inn is your cheapest option, I think it's $30-40 a night. Lots of places to rent boards and great surf! But, it's flat in the summer, at least until hurricane season.
Tortola (TUPJ), BVI has some great surf but I don't know about accomodations/rental cars. Also only good in the winter. Rental boards available at Josiah's bay for sure, possibly elsewhere on the island as well. Layed over for the day there, rented a board and caught some great waves with two other guys in the water.

Plenty of breaks in the SJU area, and even more if you're willing to drive 30-45 minutes. Rincon, Aguadilla, Isabela, all on the west and where the surf is the best. But, minimum 2 hours drive to get there

Finally, been waiting for a thread like this. I was actually thinking of non-reving down to Panama City, Panama memorial week. Pacific Coast of Central America is pretty consistent this time of the year.
Laxrox- you from the CFL area? I spent four years in Melbourne Beach. Currently live on the south shore of Long Island.

Did Panama a few years back. Rented a car did the whole west coast up towards David. Some good waves, kinda spread out compared to other places. Food not as good as other central American destinations, but they use the USD so that is easy!
Second the Zihuat and drive north, pretty simple, good food and waves.
Costa Rica......sure....easy and all that!
Nicaragua. Offshore all day. Less glamorous but the waves
Are good.
El Salvador... Regular footer yes! Missed swell there, need to go back.
Maine....who would have thought, rent thick wetsuit. And have an American experience!
Cabo.... Epic with a swell. Some of the more fun pt breaks I've surfed.
Still need To do PR. on the list for sure. But I'm looking out the window at the first north shore)))
Oh there is more but I'll listen and learn something.
