308K last year. Flew less than 100 hours. Aviation related. Next question? And if you can promise anyone at this thread who is considering walking away from aviation that they can be in your shoes any more than they can be in mine, "you'll have some cred w/me-".... All they need do is p.m. me for the details (2 people already have) and i'd be glad to guide them in the process. I'm not promising anyone anything-simply offering REAL alternatives, instead of blowing smoke up their @ss. Are YOU promising people here that they can somehow make 308K in aviation starting today? Keep on smoking that crack-and i'll see you in he E.R. |
DE727,
You are right, there are no guarrantees in life except death and taxes. I strive to be as successful as you have become in aviation. Im sure you can say that some of it had to do with skill, but most of it was luck and timing. Every occupation has its ups and downs, and no guarrantees. I plan to stick it out in the aviation industry because I know that if I buckle down I will end up where I want to be in the future. This industry is has its positives and negatives, just like other industries. The only difference is that when you get seniority as a pilot, you work less and make more. People on APC complain way to much, and always say the grass is greener on the other side, but the fact is that it isnt. |

I agree. Folks like Skyhigh and Tony Montana suggest that it's easy to make regional Capt pay doing anything from Bus driver, to Cop, to tile layer, outside of flying. Even get to be home every night. Would love to hear from those who follow the Tony Montana route to an easy 300K in the medical biz. Fly your own Pitts and screw the airlines, he says. I don't think it's as easy as it sounds but more power to those who walk away and go that route. |

"actually talking about how they've managed to survive through furloughs and the ups/downs of aviation"
I got furloughed once. Took me six months before I got another job. Glad I stuck it out. |
More, jobs and opportunities

This is not just another "cycle". Our entire aviation way of life appears to be in jeopardy. Skyhigh |

I don't agree with this statement. The "leaving the careers" forum is supposed to about leaving aviation and we are openly discussing it. I actually think APC is a very positive site, take a look at all the guys/gals that have posted in this forum that are actually talking about how they've managed to survive through furloughs and the ups/downs of aviation regardless of whether it was in aviation or not...
Trying not to be a smart ass but that's actually a very negative statement. I would have to disagree. Their is a ton of negativity to this site, not just on this thread. All you here is people complaining and whining about how bad their job is. Many individuals on here expect the world to be given to them, just because they can fly a plane. Just like any career you get into, except maybe the govt, city jobs, or a trade your job is never safe. The argument saying that pilots pay a ton of money for their flight school education and come out making 25k their first year is a bunch of crap. No matter what career you get into, you have to work your way up. Some people make it, some people dont. Others get layed off, others dont, and the "grass isnt greener on the other side" I worked in the business world for 2 years prior to making a committent to follow my dream. I saw my boss, who made over 300k and worked at my company for over 24 yrs get canned. He cleaned out his office the next day. S&%$ happens. In regards to time away from home, I rather have 15 full days to see my family, than 30 days when I am working twelve hours a day, constantly thinking of my job when I get home, and also miss important family events. The grass isnt greener, I hate to break it to you, unless you are firefighter then you never work :). |

I don't think it's as easy as it sounds but more power to those who walk away and go that route. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was an "easy" journey, looking back over the last 7 1/2 years, i'd say it was one of the hardest things I ever did. It is also one of the most rewarding things I ever did, for myself and my family. I have 2 careers essentially, because I am still sitting on an ATP/MEL, CFI/AI/ME, with 1 type rating, and a medical career that is extremely lucrative. That someone can turn disaster into success should not pose a threat to anyone here, that's the spirit of this great country. There are guys here, thinking about a career change-and wondering what they can do with their aviation degrees, I simply pointed out what I had parlayed my 4 year aviation degree into- Hey de727ups-just checked it out-UPS isn't hiring now. On the other hand, we need about 15 more M.D.'s at our little facility. Anyone interested? |
"The outside world is defiantly easier and has more opportunities for success..."
I keep hearing that. Just waiting to hear from those who walked away with great success and how they did it. That's what this forum is about. |

There ya go, peeps. UPS isn't hiring but you too can be an MD with Tony Montana. Just PM him for the details. Let us know how it works out. |
