Commuting in Uniform
#12
I commute in day of my trip and try to minimalist my time away from home. Getting to base and pulling a wrinkly uniform out of my bag and finding an iron isn't an option. I know some people don't know what an iron is but some of us use them to make out uniform look nice and wrinkle free. A light commuter jacket over the uni fools most passengers.
Regards to the MCI incident I wish someone would put hands on me. I'd give YouTube a show in self defense

Niagra going to the non-aerosol squirt bottles changed my life!

I usually commute in and out on the same day of my trip and I always commute in uniform. And yes, I take off my tie and insignia because I don't like wearing the tie and it's all or nothing.
Honesty, who cares? Do it if you want, don't do it if you don't want. If I have a long airport sit or an opportunity to go to a lounge and grab a meal or drinks then I will change. Otherwise, I just keep the uniform on out of either laziness or not wanting to iron a shirt in the lounge.

If you don't visibly wear the ID in the cabin, (out of uniform) the aft FAs/LEO/Air Marshall may not know you are a crew member sitting in the back if they need you in an emergency or assistance in a physical passenger altercation if needed. Food for thought....

OR.....you could just show them your ID, tell them your seat and that you can help if needed, and then put your ID in your pocket if you need it quickly.....which 1 time of 1,000,000 you might. BTW, do you know what the Air Marshall's/LEO's look like and where they are seated....ever. Have you ever seen any of them displaying their ID's around their neck or traveling in their respective uniforms?......food for thought. If they don't travel in full display.....why do you or any other airline employee do so?

I never understood why pilots (not in uniform) board planes showing their company IDs around their necks on a lanyard... see it all the time. The flight bag is more than enough to advertise... no reason to have other pax know who you are and make assumptions on how you got a seat on that particular flight.

I believe the Jumpseat briefing card says the jumoseater must display their ID while on the Jumpseat

I have found that you are less likely to be left behind when in uniform. I mean it seems like even if you check in early they try to leave you behind if you're not standing right in front of them in uniform. They just see you as any other nonrev that isn't getting a seat on their oversold flight
Also, in the winter where do you put your blazer when commuting out of uniform?

If I am in civies I wear my badge on to the plane and then put it away. I do this so that the FAs know I am there (just in case), so that I can get a bottle of water (sometimes), and they won't give me the battle ax treatment they give the regular passengers.
I usually commute in uniform, but after sitting in a middle seat and getting accosted by the window and aisle passenger at the same time, with my ear buds in, about our little incident last week, I might have to change my tactics.
