I think we are all in agreement that you wear ID on the flight deck in/out of uniform:

Jumpseat = Wear ID on the flight deck (I would think every company has this in their FOM)

Passenger = Don't wear ID unless you want to be treated special and/or be on the standby security detail

"Hey Fed....take your FAA i.d. and lanyard off while observing this flight...you look like a fool, according to some of the forums"

It just seemed obvious to me that you should always wear your credentials while occupying a flight deck jumpseat.

Only airline pilots could have 5 pages on why we should not.

Sidetrack alert: I was taught it was a no-no to have a beer/cocktail while jumpseating, even in the back. Non-revving... drink away, jumpseat and it's tonic water and a lime. Am I remembering this wrong?

That's my policy when jumpseating. Probably worrying over nothing but to me, having a beer isn't worth risking that one in a million scenario or knowing every company's policy. I'm a pilot so of course I love a free beer or cocktail as much as anyone but I'll just wait till I get where I'm going.

Perhaps it's 5 pages because of non sequiturs like yours. You're not seated among pax in the flight deck, therefore you're not advertising your free seat to the pax.

Commuting does not mean jumpseating. Jumpseating means jumpseating. I thought this thread was titled "commuting in uniform" and was talking about sitting among the passengers in uniform.

But yes, offline jumpseating typically means no booze with a few exceptions.

A lot of folks seem hung up on other pax knowing that you got a free seat. Is that really an issue a lot of people are encountering? Is there some kind of shame I should be feeling for getting a free seat (assuming there is even one to be had!) while Joe Schmoe has to pay $89 to get to Denver?

No, it just opens up a whole host of annoying conversation topics or rants (especially lately). Blend in and you can watch your tv show, read a book or take a nap in peace. Why are people hung up on wearing their ID around their neck while off duty? I usually get a tool vibe from people who do that. Just saying.
