So the JetBlue flight from JFK to Aruba never exceed 50 miles from shore?
No, they would only be restricted like that if they were not overwater equipped (rafts, nav gear, proper radios, etc).

If so equipped, they could fly direct JFK to Aruba as long as that routing was not more than 60 minutes single engine from an appropriate diversion field, which would then involve ETOPS. From what I can see, it would be very easy to fly JFK-AUA non-ETOPS.

From Boston/JFK to Caribbean islands. Just depends on the weather how far we go out. Or bermuda

JFK-AUA would have to fly the shore line in then down the island chain to SJU then down the Caribbean island chain to AUA. Pretty silly.

If Extended Overwater equipped, they fly JFK-BMD-SJU-AUA.

That makes sense, thanks! So if they were ETOPS certified they could just fly JFK-AUA without going through SJU and the Caribbean island chain, right?

Yes and No......ETOPS and Extended Overwater are not one and the same. You can have one without the other.

You will mostly see Extended Overwater approval with out ETOPS vs seeing ETOPS without Extended Overwater.
Any operator with rafts, vests and simple training can do Extended Overwater. ETOPS requires more paperwork

One can fly over Polar routes, Siberia or parts of Africa that could get them into an ETOPS scenario but aren't over a body of water.

So to answer your question, ETOPS only isn't going to get them the routing you said. They will be Ext Overwater equipped for that route.

Here is jetblue 559 routing. SHIPP JETZZ BLUUU DUMPR ICCEY OHRYN BEHHR RESQU SKPPR L455 TASNI L455 KINCH L455 KBEZA L455 SCAPA UG431 BEXER UG885 ONDAS APNUT APNUT1A

Direct from JFK to sju pretty much then to aua. So having extended overwater operations saves a ton of fuel and time
