Ya exactly. C5 goes to high per diem places and breaks a lot. That’s all I meant. It’s only a couple grand more than other heavies at most.

Plus don't forget tax exemption due to combat zone visits. That can pay off quite well. I think they're guarding against the folks that used to take a 2-day TDY to the 'Deid on the last day of every month so they could get the full year tax free in return for 12 2-day TDYs to Qatar (Qatar also no longer gets tax exemption IIRC), but trips to xxxistan or other actual nasty places still pay off with a couple of small allowances and a tax exemption, that can total up to $1000/month or more. Heavy drivers may have much greater opportunity for these trips than fighter or support folks.

1) Airline employer - USAF
2) Seat - (doesn’t matter) 3) Equipment - C-5M 4) Years of Service with company - 6, 5 as a winged flyer 5) How many days you worked - 297 6) How many overnights you had - 134 7) How many hours you flew - 623 8) How many hours did you work the desk - 1630 9) Total gross base pay - 69516 10) Extras: per diem - 8400, housing and subsistence allowance - 33852, flight pay - 2472 11) Employer retirement contributions - 0 Total - 112000 and change. C-5M is about as high paying as you can get in the AF. Comes out under 30 bucks an hour LOL Time to get out...o wait I can’t until 2023 Job security 100% A Plan (if you make it to 20) around 4200/month for life Aviation bonus 35k/year But you’re right, don’t stick around long term for the money. It takes other reasons. Mil will continue to bleed pilots until they figure that out. |
A plan is a bit less, but $40K/ year is about right (O5, 20.2 years).
I beg to differ on job security. 3 years ago they were non-continuing passed over O4s and boarding to O3. Overall, mil path has a much higher floor but a lower ceiling. I’ll probably still have 2500-3000 above me at 65. |

Job security 100% A Plan (if you make it to 20) around 4200/month for life Aviation bonus 35k/year "Hey, you've got the midnight shift all week for this exercise." "Hey, where are you slides for the staff mtg?" "Hey, Boss wants you to be pro-jo for the spouses charity auction next month." "Hey, also, Boss wants you to get some face time with General Pot Belly next week; go to Protocol and build the itinerary." "Hey sir, scheduling here, Boss says you're on probation because you didn't fly enough non-precisions last month." <But I was TDY to a conference!> "Hey, you're overdue on your Trafficking In Humans Computer Based Trng, so your Leave in cancelled until that's done." "Hey, how come you didn't submit any Amn of the Month award packages on your troops?" <But I was TDY to a conference!> "Are you going to the NCO Induction banquet Tuesday night? You were a no-show last month..." "Hey, I know it's not likely, but just in case we get tasked, can you look at 3 different Courses of Actions and brief them to the Boss?" "Hey, don't forget your Kevlar and Helmet for the nightly rocket and mortar attacks. But make sure your Reflective belt is on too." If I'm lying, I'm dying... |
You are not lying Bro.... you are not lying.
Reasons 90 thru 101 why good people get out of the military.. |
I don't want to use my 1st ever post as a Johnson Measurement Post, but as far as I could tell, no one posted a larger number than me, but I had to quit scrolling as my vision began to fail me.
My take is this: 1.) I'm sitting here listening to my dad's "death rattle." The earliest memory of my entire life is my dad and that signature white cover the Pan Am pilots wore! Ladies and gentlemen, we're not taking any of this with us when we're gone! But we're leaving behind memories for other people! 2.) I'm military, did the minimum time I had to do on active duty and was picked up by SWA in 2000, and still serve, now in a non flying role in the reserves. 3.) I'm pushing 50 years old, no wife, no ex, no kids. That used to be a badge of honor I wore. Now, watching this old man die, all I can think of is he is leaving me, my brothers and sisters, and a plethora of grand kids behind. People who will always remember him as bigger than life! My point? TAKE YOUR 300K ish money and run if your max pay Capt ladies and gents! You can get ridiculous and probably pick up another $175k if your clever. But you and only you know if it's truly worth it. *** It's always been a source of pride, and produced many a chuckle with me, that I can be flying 73's and making more than any international Captain I know. But I'll guarantee you one thing, I flew 2, probably 3 times as many actual hours than them. Who is getting the better deal? That's a debate that can not be won. |
