That makes sense, if it's transparent and quantifiable.

The quantifiable part is a big gotcha though... how do account for coal powered EV's vs. nuclear-powered EV's?

How do you account for life-cycle environmental costs. Do we care if the pollution associated with exotic chemical production occurs in Asia? Or is it all good as long as it's happening not in North America?

Or, as friend who did a big road trip, pre-COVID, mentioned the EV charging site out West tied to a diesel generator. Enter credit card, when approved diesel starts up, EV charges. Cant get much more CO2 conscious than that.

Maybe it runs on algae based diesel...

Default California income taxes

This gas tax issue has been around since before EVs when car manufacturers started building lighter and more fuel efficient vehicles in general. Since then, there has been a drop of tax revenue per vehicle miles. So just wait, if it hasn’t happened yet, states will mandate car manufacturers install GPSs that send mileage data (among other things) to the states taxing authority’s office for the purpose of billing you monthly (among other things). Which might be ok if it replaced the gas tax. But I would bet it would be in addition to.

Don't forget wind, solar and hydro.

Quantifying it would be arduous but with EV you can help end it.

I am just saying that if you want to add taxes to EV to help fund the roads they shouldn't more than the taxes that are collected through gas sales. We are also talking around $100 a year and if you really wanted to get technical it should be more of a weight and mileage tax where a truck will contribute more than a mini cooper. The only problem with that is the government gets to monitor you and your driving habits so they can tax you appropriately.

The only time a diesel would be used to charge a car was at a place where there was no electricity available. It would also cost nearly 4 to 5 times more than a normal charger. It would be no different if you were to go to a gas station where there is no electricity and they would be running a diesel to power the pumps. But hey lets use the .0000001% of chargers out there as the standard.

It’s definitely not as good as prop 13 but with some of the same intent.
They are simply “normalizing” the behavior over a long time horizon because it would be unpassable if it happened quickly.

I stand by my claim that if a state has a tax program to place leins on senior citizens homes and confiscate the proceeds upon death, then they are setting people up for big tax increases. I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone and I understand the desire to have your property taxes “locked in” for life, but most of these plans are a Ponzi scheme and unsustainable.

and you have to sit in bumper to bumper traffic in the ‘regular’ lanes while people in $100,000 cars were allowed to whiz by you in the HOV lane all by themselves.

I also don't see many EV people saying they shouldn't pay for their use on the roads but to pay a higher amount than what is collected by the gas tax is just a cash grab by greedy politicians.
Lack of smog from EV’s? The vast majority of electricity in the US comes from fossil fueled generation. You haven’t eliminated smog you just moved it to someone else’s backyard.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love it if everyone drove EV’s and the US was 100% nuke power. We could tell the middle east oil dictators and russia to F off.
