Southwest Airlines commits to fleetwide RNP capability

By the way, F/O input is welcomed by most - change takes time - why not suggest it in a company-specific forum? You're not on probation, so have some huevos.
"ya, right through the fence at 55th and central sorry, had to mention that one"
Does that make you feel validated?

like a parking voucher? no, just need to combat nonsense. not having a/t or vnav does not make things safer

I wasn't posting to you, it was intended for Grumman. Take a discussion on RNP/automation and add a flippant comment on a tragic accident in a snowstorm, I guess that's your idea of humor. Having kids myself, I don't find it real amusing, but to each his own I guess. Autothrottles and VNAV had nothing to do with it, that is truly nonsense, unless whatever plane you're flying has auto-throttle thrust reversers.

Not that engaged. On a recent flt to BWI, the whole plane could hear the clacker as the flt deck was making a PA. I'm curious, do you guys actually write this stuff up in the logbook? My guess is this propably happens alot.

The reality is that each individual pilot is responsible for being engaged and safe during their flights. Autothrottles/VNAV/LNAV/thrust reversers/autobrakes ect. are tools for us to use. It is up to the pilot in command to determine what tools will be most effective and how to use them

As a captain at a Low Cost Airline that uses the NG's in VNAV and Autothrottles on, I think that it's about time that the indusrty catches up to us in the use of RNP. Having flown the -200 I am more than familiar with the dive and drive required at many of our airports in Canada and I am a true believer in the safety aspect of RNP approaches. You can say all you want about not being dialled in but crossing the FAF on an approach to minimums, I feel MUCH more dialed in to what the aircraft is doing than I was on a standard non-precision approach. Being a systems monitor allows four eyes to know exactly what to look at as opposed to two trying to keep up with the required approach and two wondering what the hell the other guy is doing.
As far as expenses go....next to Allegiant we have the highest operating margins in North America while still using VNAV and autothrottles. We also contract out most of our approaches to Naverus with the thought that safety comes before cost.
I have to say that seeing the aircraft thread it's way through a tight mountain valley and turning a three mile final to RNP minimums is truly amazing. We will soon be doing RNP departures as well with procedures that would be executed in the event of an engine failure....really cool.
