Legacy hiring numbers 2020
I’ve heard 1,300-1,500 at UAL/DL next year.
AA just put out our expected numbers:
(1,398 total/ 1,000 off the street)
What are future pilot hiring projections for American Airlines?
Our projections indicate we will hire 1398 pilots in 2020. This hiring is a result of many factors, including the fact that a lot of our pilots are approaching the FAA’s mandatory pilot retirement age of 65. Thirty one percent of our new hire pilots come to us via flow-through agreements with our wholly owned regional carriers. The remainder consists of pilots who come from the large pool of qualified candidates who have applied to be American Airlines pilots.

In terms of AA, the real question is how many of the ‘off-the-street’ hires are going to be non-military fixed-wing guys. Historically it’s been low in the recent past, but the pool can’t be that deep, especially when spread between 3 legacies.

It will be interesting if/when the max returns. I think the staffing numbers may be a little out of balance for a while.

Alaska: Claims to be hiring 250-300. Historically divide this by 3 to get the truth. So maybe 120.
Strong possibility Alaska likely will not hire, even a possibility we could possibly furlough as airbuses are returned and no new airframes are acquired. Involuntary displacements and downgrades are occurring and a real threat with the latest bids and those to come.
Alaska has gotten crushed in California and is waving the white flag as they cut routes and downsize to RJs in the state after losing the virgin loyal customers. Scott Kirbys aggressive vision for United in SFO and SWA California product basically has been a death warrant for the 86 year old airline that thinks they knew best.

Over 400 hired in 2019 which was their goal and more-or-less the limit for what JBU could handle with current facilities. That was more than 10% of the SL added.
New sim building being completed this spring to handle additional capacity planned for 2020 forward. It’s completely possible to get into the high 500s.
