Diversification?

I know.....if you want to run in gay sex threesomes in Miami hotels while getting high on Meth and whatever......THEN DONT RUN FOR POLITICAL OFFICE. Stay on the "down low". Reminds me, sort of, like John Edwards, cheating on his cancer stricken wife and impregnating another woman on the opposite coast.....fine run your life the way you want, but NOT WHILE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.
Incredible hubris by some people.

Good point....maybe they run for office to provide legal cover vs the "common man". Not to mention the ability to use their "campaign donations" to fight "spurious legal charges".

So...Do we think airlines should diversify into other businesses to obtain new sources of revenue in down times? I don’t think the current business model works. Why not invest/own in something outside aviation and travel? Heck go into the beer brewing business for all I care. The industry needs to insulate itself better.

I kid I kid. Diversification seems like an 80/90s thing. Like when Pepsi/KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell could all be bought in the same place. Jack of all trades and a master of none comes to mind.

The current business model DOES work, for normal business conditions. If you continue to lose 95% of your revenue, though, nothing is going to save your behind.
Now these businesses COULD have better prepared themselves for this, if they could have foreseen this shock, by maybe, oh well, NOT doing such massive stock buybacks, but do you expect them to have foreseen THIS?
Maybe the diversification would be that hedge funds—WB and his BH, for example—buy up an airline and stick it in their portfolio. Instant diversification for the investors, of the hedge fund.
Disclosure: I neither hope for nor recommend the hedge fund concept mentioned.

Airlines could diversify. I really see some compelling reasons to stop any more mergers from happening. In fact I think we have good reason to get the SEC to break up the survivors. Any company so bis as to need a bailout to protect the US economy is too big to exist without an SEC breakup.
