China "rebound", leisure travel lags

Harbin the largest Chinese city in the North, is in lockdown. Cases have spiked there, probably because of the open border with Russia. This happened 23/24 Apr.

Why trust China’s numbers though?

Did anyone really think this would be a “V pattern” recovery. For the most part it’s always been easier to go downhill than climb uphill. You can even jump off a cliff and arrive much faster (seems like we did this) than any baseline situation climbing back up. Just a go slow period back up, maybe with a few decent spikes nothing more. People will figure it out.

Having flown a fair amount in China recently I can tell you it is nowhere near the 40-50% mark. Guangzhou airport is almost a ghost town. Nowhere near anything normal. All the businesses are open but most still wear a mask and the malls are empty. The Labour day holiday brought a small uptick this week for May1-5 but travel will drop to nothing afterwards. Believe it or not, the most desired city for travel for Chinese this year is Wuhan. Things are far from normal. https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/w...vey/index.html
