Cockpit dynamics during long transits
Kind of a weird question, but I've always wondered about what the Captain-FO social dynamic is typically like during trips. Would love to hear from all experiences and companies!
1. How do you pass the time during long transits? Are kindles/games/ipad reading commonplace?
2. How much small talk is typically expected? Does the Captain typically set the social tone for the cockpit? Are captains generally chatty because of their comfort and experience level - or is it the opposite - are they so experienced and "burned out" that they prefer to zone out in silence? Does the captain prefer the FO to make small talk the entire time? Or is a competent and quiet FO preferred? Is it weird to share long moments of silence or do captains prefer FO's who constantly initiate conversation?
3. What's the layover dynamic like? Is it standard practice for the CA buy drinks for the FO? Or do most crews silently part ways until showtime the next flight?
Appreciate any and all insight on this! Thanks guys.

This question feels like something I get asked at a dinner party, pre Covid of course 🤪, when a stranger wants to know about the job.
I kind of wish the OP asked “what is your route?”
My last flight we discussed all of the new operating bulletins, how they apply to our flight, and we discussed drift down for mountain conditions.
What else would we be discussing? Silly question
